Chartered Town Planner

Overview

The Level 7 Chartered Town Planner Degree Apprenticeship offers a route for new and existing employees to progress into professional planning roles. There are two entry points: postgraduate level entry for employees with an undergraduate degree and an additional undergraduate component for those with A levels or needing a stepping stone to postgraduate study.

Our course will deliver against the nationally recognised Level 7 Chartered Town Planner Degree Apprenticeship Standard. On successful completion, all participants will gain the MSc Urban Planning. Participants taking the undergraduate entry route will also gain the University Certificate Urban Planning and the University Advanced Diploma Urban Planning prior to undertaking the MSc Urban Planning.

The course offers the opportunity for students to expand and formalise their experience, with successful participants gaining Chartered Town Planner status on completion of the End Point Assessment.

The apprenticeship offers a range of specialisms, including environment, urban design and development, housing, historic environment, transport and infrastructure, economic development, and health, as well as the opportunity for a study trip to a European city.

Course length and entry requirements

The Level 4 entry programme is usually delivered one day a week over four years plus up to one year in practice. For direct entry to Level 7 (MSc Urban Planning), the programme will be delivered for one day per week over two years plus up to one year in practice.

The programme adopts a blended learning approach with modules delivered through a combination of lectures, class-based seminars and workshops, practical work and site visits. There will also be a component of work-based learning with additional workshops and/or work-based visits for apprentices and employers.

Participants must have the following entry requirements

The usual entry requirements for this entry profile are five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English language and maths – plus one of the following

  • 120 UCAS points from at least two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications – we accept AS levels and general studies

Or

  • 104 UCAS points from three A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications – we accept general studies

For students entering the apprenticeship at postgraduate level the entry requirements are a lower second classification (2:2) BSc/BA (Hons) degree or higher, or the Sheffield Hallam University Certificate and Advanced Diploma in Urban Planning.

In the absence of the academic qualifications, non-standard applicants will be considered for undergraduate level entry by the course leader based on their work experience and ability to undertake the required level of study.
