How industry-leading events are hiring Hallam graduates
Sheffield Doc/Fest is a world leading documentary festival, celebrating the art and business of documentary and all non-fiction storytelling. Doc/Fest welcomes over 32,700 festival goers each year, including over 3,500 industry delegates from over 60 countries.
Significant planning and organisation is required to make the event run smoothly.
What we did
Sheffield Doc/Fest have a large intake of 360 volunteer roles over their festival period, and also a team of sixteen festival assistants working year-round. Through recruiting Sheffield Hallam students and graduates, the festival has found enthusiastic individuals with a diverse range of skills. In some cases, these new recruits go on to become permanent members of their team.
Sheffield Hallam MA student River Ferris volunteered at Doc/Fest in June 2014, returning for their festival assistant internship programme in September. Following these opportunities, River was successful in being recruited to a paid position in the marketing team as an assistant.
Through embracing development opportunities and continually developing her skills, she moved into the permanent position of marketing manager and is now responsible for a department at an international film festival.
“There’s lots of benefits to employing students and we spend time investing in them because we get volunteers and interns progressing through the company, which is something that we are proud of. Volunteers who put a lot into their role often have the opportunity to become a full-time part of the team.
It’s exciting when we get a new cohort of volunteers who are excited and want to prove themselves. There’s such a wide range of skills coming from Sheffield Hallam students, it’s great to get people from lots of different backgrounds to come in with different views. It’s new ideas that are pushing businesses forward and if someone’s got fresh ideas, it’s always welcome.”
