Food technology

Sheffield Hallam University has a long-standing reputation for high-quality food courses. By working in partnership with major manufacturers and retailers, we develop tomorrow’s leaders in food manufacturing, safety and technical innovation.

Our new degree apprenticeship in food technology starts in April 2018. We developed the programme in collaboration with representatives from the food industry and higher education institutions. The Food Industry Technical Professional Degree Apprenticeship is a unique programme that combines honours-level education with workplace learning. Meet the course leader, Caroline Millman.

The Food and Drink Federation predicts food manufacturers face a critical skills gap and will need 109,000 new recruits by 2022. Our programme gives apprentices the technical knowledge and skills to fill those gaps, both in your business and the wider industry. It covers the core knowledge, skills and behaviours your business needs from employees who work in technical roles.

The BSc (Honours) course is an innovative work-based learning solution, designed to meet the needs of the employer and learner. The three year programme has been mapped against the Food Industry Technical Professional Degree Apprenticeship Standard. Apprentices will be eligible to apply for membership with the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST), and gain Registered Science Technician status.
