This course is designed for architecture and architectural technology graduates, but is also suitable if you have studied other built environment or international courses. You'll gain the specialist expertise you need to a rewarding career in architecture. Industry-centred, hands-on learning is combined with research, technical training and professional development — preparing you for a range of architecture positions.

Advanced digital practice
This course provides a thorough introduction to the contemporary and future applications of Building Information Modelling (BIM), using the latest software. These skills will be applied throughout the course, allowing you to explore design projects, and create data-rich environments.
Technical and low-energy designs
You will develop skills to equip you in the exploration of design ideas through research, modelling, and experimentation. This will lead to the presentation of formulated solutions.
You will be introduced to critical concepts of low-energy and sustainable construction, with a focus on the retrofitting and adaption of existing buildings — a critical issue in architectural practice. The projects will include the redesign and upgrading of a real building, fully modelled and environmentally tested using industry-standard energy software.
Professional and applied projects
The course provides the opportunity to engage with clients on real projects at a variety of stages. This allows you to better develop and communicate your own design ideas.
The course culminates in the development of academically robust research strategies, leading to the production of a personalised major design project. This could be a live project or for a real client, and can be in any area of architectural study. This will help you to develop personal, specialist expertise.
Many of the modules on the course provide an opportunity for you to explore current global issues, and undertake projects located internationally.
The course allows you to establish personal goals and action plans for personalised career development and lifelong learning transferable skills and reflective practice.

This programme has been recognised by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) as meetingestablished standards in terms of course content and qualifies graduates forassociate membership of the institute (ACIAT). Graduates will also be entitledto exemptions against the Educational Standards of the MCIAT ProfessionalAssessment when progressing to become a Chartered Architectural Technologist.
CIAT recognises Sheffield Hallam University as an accredited Centre of Excellence for learning and teaching in architectural technology.

Equipment and facilities
On this course you work with and have access to
- fully equipped design studios with extended access by arrangement
- the latest Building Information Modelling (BIM) software
- energy and environmental modelling software
- modelling workshops with laser cutters, 3D printers and a range of woodworking and metal working tools
- Adobe Suite software (including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) image and movie editing software
- Computer Aided Design (CAD) software
Normally you need a good 2:2 degree or above (or international equivalent degree) in architecture or architectural technology. We also welcome applications from graduates from construction, engineering and environmental undergraduate courses. Consideration is also given to those without prior university qualifications who have at least five years of relevant professional experience. You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam. Find out more
All applications should ideally be accompanied with a digital portfolio. Please refer to the guidance notes below. Where it is difficult to provide a portfolio we will invite you to an interview to discuss your application.
You need a high level of English language competence to successfully complete the course. If you are a non-native speaker of English, you typically need IELTS 6.0 and no component (listening, reading, writing and speaking) below 5.5.
If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.0 or equivalent we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.

Fees and funding
Our tuition fee for UK/EU students starting full-time study in 2019/20 is £7,200 for the course.
