Course summary

Learn about molecular and cell biology before apply this knowledge to specific problems, undertaking an investigation into diagnostic procedures and other areas including research of relevance to biosciences in clinical, industrial and academic environments.

How you learn

You develop practical laboratory skills both in taught and research environments, with taught modules including a mixture of lectures and tutorials with a significant amount of laboratory time. Other modules are tutorial-led with considerable input from the course leader, who acts as personal tutor. Each year the course team reviews course, and its suitability to meet the needs of its students and employment in the sector.

David teaches molecular biology and biochemistry at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Applied learning

Live projects

You complete an independent research project towards the end of the course. During this project you apply your skills and knowledge directly to current research into molecular or cellular biology. Practical work will give you direct experience of performing molecular and cellular biology experiments using industry standard equipment for cell culture, quantitative nucleic acid determination, imaging by confocal microscopy and flow cytometry.

You work alongside tutors within the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre to undertake research into cancer, musculoskeletal diseases, human reproduction, neurological disease, medical microbiology and immunological basis of disease. Their work is regularly published in international peer-reviewed journals, showing that the course is underpinned by relevant quality research. Your practical work is supported by a team of technical and academic staff with a diverse range of skills and experience gained from a variety of different working environments.

Networking opportunities

Tutors within the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre complete research into cancer, musculoskeletal diseases, human reproduction, neurological disease, medical microbiology and immunological basis of disease. Their work is regularly published in international peer-reviewed journals, showing that the course is underpinned by relevant quality research.


Future careers

Employability skills are developed throughout the course and are embedded within the modules. Your course leader will work with you to develop your personal, technical, academic, communication and presentation skills required for professional roles in research, industry, healthcare diagnostics and a range of scientific technical roles.

The course team will support you in obtaining careers advice for employment, career development and scientific career opportunities in the UK and abroad. During course you have the opportunity undertake a project with the Venture Matrix, University-wide learning scheme. This provides you with a chance to carry out a work-related project with local organisations.

Equipment and facilities

Practical work is carried out in our teaching laboratories which contain industry standard equipment for cell culture, quantitative nucleic acid and protein analysis and a sophisticated suite of analytical equipment such as HPLC and gas chromatography. In addition many of our research facilities such as flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and mass spectrometry are used in taught modules and research projects and our tutors are experts in these techniques.


Entry requirements

UK students

You must have one of the following

• a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in a biological subject or equivalent

• a professional qualification of equal standing to an honours degree, such as MIBiol by examination, FIMLS

• other qualifications such as HND, HNC or unclassified degree in biological subject, plus significant relevant work experience

If English is not your first language you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or a recognised equivalent. If your level of English language is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider an appropriate Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve the required level of English.

You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam. Find out more

Our tuition fee for UK/EU students starting full-time study in 2018/19 is £6,590 for the course.
