Course summary

  • Develop an understanding of the philosophies and practices of international human resource management (HRM).
  • Appreciate and critically evaluate the theoretical concepts, principles, standards and frameworks of HRM.
  • Develop skills related to improving the activities and functions of modern human resource management.
  • Develop a holistic approach to examining issues and solving complex international HR problems.

The course focuses on managing human resources in organisations that operate across national borders and the cross cultural issues of people management. If you want to develop your career in HRM at a strategic and international level, this course is for you.

How you learn

We begin by introducing you to organisation theory, which covers organisational design, organisational theory and methodologies for understanding complex organisations. You also develop your critical thinking on issues such as organisational change and innovation.

Applied learning

Work placements

The course includes attendance at a three-day residential held outside Sheffield. The residential gives you hands on experience of managing HR activity in a strategic and international context.

Networking opportunities

The course offers a range of extra-curricular activities to help you apply your learning. The HR Network is managed by students and provides opportunities for networking and hearing guest speakers. There are practical project blocks and applied workshops which help in developing a range of HR skills and competencies.

Entry requirements

UK students

Normally one of the following

• a good degree (2.2) or equivalent

• professional equivalent

We may consider you without a first degree if you have the necessary experience and can demonstrate an ability to complete the course. You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam. Find out more

Overseas applicants from countries whose first language is not English must normally produce evidence of competence in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills (or equivalent) is the standard for non-native speakers of English. If your English language skill is currently below an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English level.

Home/EU students

Our tuition fee for UK/EU students starting full-time study in 2018/19 is £7,500 for the course.
