This course provides you with a solid base on which to base your undergraduate studies. You'll learn valuable computing and professional skills and, upon completion, will pass directly onto one of our specialist computing degrees.
How you learn
The course is based around both practical and theoretical study, and structured as a sequence of projects. We call these pathways, and they allow you to decide which topic you'd like to pursue at degree level. While undertaking the projects you will learn how to work effectively in a team, identify and develop a range of professional and personal skills, use research methods and study skills, and apply project management techniques to your group projects.

Throughout the course, you'll work on projects which have useful real-world application. These are updated regularly to reflect trends and improvements to the given technology, but might include topics such as
- mobile app programming
- cyber security
- arino / raspberry pi programming
- LEGO Serious Play
- website development
- database for business
- network management and hardware configuration
This year prepares you for a range of computing degree courses that develop your computing, personal and specialist skills, which you can use to apply to computing and technology associated industries.

Equipment and facilities
On this course you may work with technologies such as

This must include at least 32 points from one A level or equivalent BTEC qualifications. For example:
- CDD at A Level.
- MMP in BTEC Extended Diploma.
- A combination of qualifications, which may include AS levels, EPQ and general studies
- English Language at grade C or 4
- Maths at grade C or 4
• Access - an Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2. At least 15 level 3 credits must be at merit grade or above from a QAA-recognised Access to HE course, or an equivalent Access to HE certificate.
We may also accept you, if you have limited qualifications but can show evidence of ability and a genuine commitment to studying computing.
We treat the foundation year as part of the computing degree programme. Offers made to students will be for four years of study (or five years of study including a placement). This is made up of the foundation year plus one of our computing degrees.
Some applicants may be invited to attend an informal interview with the course leader to ensure that the programme is suitable for themselves and their aspirations.
UK students may be able to claim financial support for the course.
If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent. If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.
Please note the University will only admit students who are aged 18 at the point of enrolment.

Fees and funding
Our tuition fee for UK/EU students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2020/2021 are regulated by the UK government and are yet to be confirmed. For an indication, our tuition fees for UK/EU students starting this course in 2019/20 are £9,250 per year.
