You will study all the key areas of building surveying including building pathology, material science, building conservation, building information modelling and fire safety. The course has an excellent reputation with employers for providing strong graduates ready and able to face the challenges of their chosen career.
How you learn
The course is taught by experienced academic staff, many of whom have practised in various different sectors of the construction industry. You learn theoretical concepts and then apply them to real life scenarios.
There is a UK residential field trip in the first semester of the first year. You also visit cities such as Edinburgh in the final year, and attend a project-based visit to a major European city (recent students went to Lisbon in Portugal) in the second year. Additional costs may apply.

Course leaders and tutors
You will have the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement in between your second and third years. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career. You could work at one of the major national or regional surveying practices, local authorities, housing associations or loss adjusters. Your placement year usually contributes towards a graduate's professional experience requirement for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Assessment of Professional Competence.
We have good links with local professional and voluntary groups with large property portfolios. They provide various building stock for case studies and project work, which centre on actual buildings with real clients. We also own a Georgian terraced house which had been adapted to an interactive teaching space. You will inspect under utilised University building assets so that the amount of site based work is maximised.

Equipment and facilities
On this course you work with
- Building Information Modelling (BIM)
- A range of University owned buildings including a Georgian terraced house, which is now a teaching space, and a number of Victorian Villas
This must include at least 64 points from two A levels, or equivalent BTEC National qualifications. For example:
- BBC at A Level.
- DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma.
- A combination of qualifications, which may include AS Levels, EPQ and general studies.
- English Language or English Literature at grade C or 4
- Mathematics at grade C or 4
We may accept GCSE equivalents.
• Access - at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2 from a relevant Open College Network accredited course
• Foundation degree - advanced entry - for direct entry to year two you must have a Foundation degree in a related subject, with an average score of 60% across the highest level modules.
• Advanced entry - for direct entry to year two you would normally have a minimum of an all merit average on all units in a construction related HND/HNC, not including key or common skills. Compensation for a pass in one unit with a distinction in another unit is permitted.
If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent.
We consider other qualifications from the UCAS tariff. Applicants with alternative qualifications or a combination of qualifications and work experience are also considered. We welcome applications from people of any age. Please contact us for further advice.

Fees and funding
Our tuition fee for UK/EU students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2019/20 is £9,250 per year. During your placement year you will pay a reduced fee of £1,200. The Department of Natural and Built Environment (NBE) and Barratt Developments Plc. are offering four scholarships for undergraduate students joining the department in September 2019 on an eligible course. The scholarships have been made possible through the generous support of donors and aim to support students from disadvantaged or under-represented backgrounds. Successful applicants will receive a non-repayable grant of £3,000 per year for three years, to help with living costs. Find out more.
