How you learn

Watch course leader Luke Bennett talk about this course.

All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.

On this course, you’ll look at how the life-cycle of real estate is core to the wider economy, the environment and society. Property performance influences not only financial returns, but also wellness, mental health, accessibility and inclusivity.

You’ll be part of Sheffield Hallam’s ambitious developments at the heart of the city — and watch the progress unfold.

Throughout the course, you’ll work with industry figures on a range of exciting real-world projects, and you’ll usually undertake a placement year in a real estate firm or an allied organisation.

You’ll cement your practical experience with applied learning in the classroom and across the city — obtaining the theory you need to practice.

You learn through

  • lectures, including guest speakers from professional practice
  • seminars and workshops
  • live projects, simulations including professional consultancy
  • field trips
  • placements

You will be taught by a well-established teaching team with comprehensive professional practice and applied research experience coupled with active participation within RICS and other professional bodies.

There are opportunities to study abroad at one of our partner universities with the possibility of funding through the Erasmus+ programme (until 2023) or the Turing Scheme.

Applied learning

Work placements

In your third year you have the chance to put your professional skills to work with a placement at one of the major national or regional offices of surveying firms, including developers and asset managers. Your placement year usually contributes 200 days towards the professional experience requirement for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' Assessment of Professional Competence.

We work with real estate firms across the UK to help all our students obtain paid placements — so you can work in a firm that suits you and where learning informs your final year studies and future career options. Salaries typically range from £14,000-£23,000 per year.  We do not support unpaid sandwich placements.

There are also many other opportunities for work experience throughout the course.

Live projects

Throughout your studies, there are a range of industry guests who will work with you on consultancy, simulations and other projects — posing real problems for you to solve.

You’ll also get to observe and participate in Sheffield Hallam’s £200 million estate development — which will transform the gateway to the city from the train station. The development will cement Hallam’s position at the heart of Sheffield’s economy and cityscape, and will enhance our existing provision of modern spaces designed for collaborative, flexible teaching and learning.

Field trips

This course makes the most out of real-world experience. There are regular regional, national and international field trips that allow you to apply your learning in diverse real estate environments. Previous trips have taken place in Dublin, Belfast, Berlin and Madrid as well as Manchester, Liverpool and London.

On a regular basis, you’ll benefit from going out into the real world. Many of our graduates are involved in the wide-ranging real estate projects taking place in Sheffield — such as a major redevelopment of a city centre cutlery works.

Networking opportunities

The course has strong links with employers and other stakeholders in the real estate sector.

Guest lectures by practitioners and networking events bring an opportunity to see how your learning relates to the world of real estate practice. We have one of the largest real estate alumni networks in the UK, with events often taking place in London and elsewhere.  Many of our alumni contribute to our annual careers day whereby all students, irrespective of their year of study, are encouraged to engage with professionals within our sector.

Our industry guests within our teaching programme often include successful Hallam graduates who are making an impact through their successful careers in the world of real estate.
