How you learn
All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.
The course includes laboratory work, such as the preparation of traditional lath and plaster walls. You’ll also work on projects which rely on data collection and analysis, cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills, team working and the development of new areas of expertise.

Applied learning
Work placements
Due to its fast-track delivery, this course doesn’t include a work placement. However, the department and careers service provide information on numerous potential employers – some offer short-term work experience and most offer graduate employment.
Field trips
The course makes use of both university and privately-owned buildings for site visits and assessment. This includes an 18th century terraced house which has been converted into a teaching space.
Cross-disciplinary projects are drawn together within an integrative field trip – culminating in an international project in an overseas city.
Networking opportunities
You’ll be able to engage with sector-specific employers at a range of networking events – including the Natural and Built Environment Employers Fair, which takes place in the autumn. The department also takes part in the Property Training Forum, which coordinates recruitment rounds, provides valuable input in terms of developing students, and seeks to improve career prospects.

On this course you work with
- university-owned property, including a Georgian terraced house adapted for inspection purposes
- the latest high-tech non-destructive testing equipment, such as flexible endoscopes, borescopes and thermal imaging cameras for detecting heat loss
- software packages, relevant specialist packages and online resources – such as the Building Cost Information Service, a key RICS resource for costing projects in construction, redevelopment and refurbishment appraisals
Entry requirements
All students
Minimum 2:2 degree or equivalent in any discipline.
We welcome applications from candidates who may not meet the exact academic entry requirements but have significant relevant experience, on application you will be referred to our course leader, who will evaluate your experience, this may involve an informal conversation either in person or by other media.
If English is not your first language you typically need an IELTS 6.0 overall score with a minimum of 5.5 in all other skills or equivalent. If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.0 we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.

Our tuition fee for UK students starting full-time study in 2023/24 is £9,910 for the course. The tuition fee displayed above is for the full course. If the full course is more than one year in duration, the fee will be divided into annual payments which will then be rounded. This may mean the total fee you pay is slightly higher than the fee stated above. If you take a break in study or have to re-take part of the course, you may also be charged an additional fee and will be notified of this at the time.
