Studying at Sheffield Hallam this academic year

We can't wait to welcome you to Sheffield Hallam this academic year 2020/21.

We're the University of the Year for Teaching Quality (The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020) and we're committed to providing you with an excellent student experience this autumn.

We’re working hard to make sure you have a high quality learning experience and that you join us on a safe campus with a comprehensive package of support in place, alongside a vibrant and fun-filled welcome!

Your learning experience

We are planning a mix of face-to-face teaching on campus and online learning.

You’ll be taught through small-group seminars, workshop and practical sessions on campus with social distancing measures in place. You’ll also have access to specialist learning facilities such as laboratories and arts studios, as well as learning spaces and libraries on campus.

This will be combined with online lectures, tutorials and access to on demand materials through our virtual learning environment, ensuring that you get the support you need in the safest way possible.

By using this mix of teaching, we can control the number of staff and students on campus at any one time, which will help us to maintain social distancing wherever possible.

We've installed hand sanitising stations around campus, and introduced the provision of face coverings where social distancing is more difficult. We have controls on entrances and exits with temperature checks, and a clear track and trace programme in place, working alongside Public Health England.

We want you to feel as comfortable and safe as possible while you're studying - however we do recognise that some of our students with protected characteristics are associated with greater vulnerability to Covid-19, and we've put plans in place to ensure that students' individual circumstances are supported.

You can find out more about the support and safety measures in place on our keeping safe on campus page.

Supporting you all the way

Alongside excellent teaching resources, we will also provide you with the help you need while studying at Sheffield Hallam – our unique student support triangle can help you settle into learning at university.

You’ll have three dedicated advisers, providing you with support and advice for personal, academic and career development throughout your start at Hallam and beyond. Our Hallam Help team will also be on hand with any questions you have before and after you start this academic year, both online and at each campus too.

We recognise that learning from home can have challenges for some of our students. If you find it difficult to work at home, we will find you a well-equipped space on campus to work, as well as help and support for students who do not have the technology to allow them to work online.

You can find out more about the support available to you on our dedicated support page and if you're an international student you can visit our International Experience Team area.

Our current students have been learning remotely since the lockdown started in March, and they're the best people to let you know how we've helped them through this time, how they’ve stayed connected to their lecturers, support staff and their course mates too. Take a look at the video below for their experiences to find out the level of support and teaching you can expect in this academic year.

Your student experience

We're currently planning a vibrant and engaging on campus and online experience for your arrival in January! We're working closely with our Students' Union to create a fantastic array of social activities to help you make friends, get involved and feel part of our Hallam community. You'll have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of both online and face-to-face campus-based events, with activities covering sport, societies and much more.

Our current students have been keeping touch throughout this period too, with Zumba classes and quizzes from the Disney society bringing together students from a range of courses - you'll never be short of someone to link up with to share your passions!

Next steps

We've developed a section on our website to let you know our commitments to keeping you safe on our campuses this academic year, including how teaching and learning will work, the safety measures we've put in place and how we'll support you during your studies.

We're here to support you every step of the way on your journey to Sheffield Hallam, and we'll be in touch regularly to let you know how our plans are progressing for welcoming you to your course and the University.
