Aimed at international and non-EU students, this foundation course prepares you to progress onto your chosen STEM undergraduate degree. Concentrate on improving your English language, alongside an introduction to technical computing and fundamental engineering principles, as well as strengthening mathematics. You will work in recently-refurbished facilities with opportunities for galleries, collaborative spaces and social learning.
How you learn
The course builds your confidence and knowledge by using the same assessment methods you have on your degree course, providing you with valuable experience of the assessment process. You are assessed at the end of each module, which provides more opportunities for feedback and supports your development throughout the programme. You are taught by the same academics who teach on the course you would progress to. This ensures a smooth transition to your chosen course.

In addition to the core modules, your timetable includes taster lectures in your chosen subject area, along with social and cultural activities to help you adjust to studying at Sheffield Hallam and living in the UK. Activities include visits and events organised by our International Experience Team, the opportunity to participate in our mentoring support scheme, career talks and subject-specific peer study group meetings. This helps you to build your confidence, improves your use of English and is a great opportunity to make friends. To help you develop a sound understanding of the discipline, we arrange visits to local companies wherever possible.
The IFP finishes in late July so you can opt to stay in the UK as you prepare to begin your undergraduate course in September. We can advise and support you with your application to extend your visa. The STEM route allows you to progress to a range of undergraduate degrees. When you submit your application, please specify your chosen undergraduate degree from the following courses:

Equipment and facilities
You have full access to all our facilities including our library, which is open 24 hours every day of the year, our support services and our accommodation.
English language requirements
To enrol on the course, you are required to have an IELTS certificate from an approved centre. You can apply for the IFP while you are waiting for your results.
For September entry, an overall IELTS 4.5 is required, with a minimum of 4.0 in all skills.
For January entry, a minimum IELTS 5.0 is needed, with a minimum of 4.5 in all skills.
Academic entry requirements
Good high school graduation grades which includes Maths.
You may be required to provide examples of creative work to support your application.
You must be 18 years old when you enrol on the course. September applicants must be 18 years old by 1st September and January applicants by 1st January.

When selecting electives, your choices will be subject to the core requirements of the course. As a result, selections may be limited to a choice between one of two or more specified electives in some instances.

Fees and funding
For the three-term programme starting in September the tuition fee in 2020/21 will be £12,310. For the two-term programme starting in January the tuition fee in 2020/21 will be £10,250. On completion of the programme, you are eligible for a £1,000 progression scholarship towards your tuition fees (for the first year of your chosen degree).
