Become a competent engineer with the underpinning knowledge of science, physics, mathematics and technologies, and the ability to apply this knowledge to automotive systems. Develop specialist skills required for a successful career in automotive industries. The indicative content of the course covers the subjects that meet the Engineering Council Benchmarks and the requirements of the accrediting professional bodies (IMechE) within the automotive engineering framework.

Applied learning

Work placements

You will have the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement in between your second and third years. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career. Previous students have taken placements at organisations including Jaguar Land Rover, Caterpillar, Rolls-Royce, Luk (UK) Ltd, Intertec Uk, BMW Manufacturing, General Motors, Triumph Motorcycles and Unilever.

Live projects

As you progress through the course you're encouraged to take an increasingly strategic approach, ultimately managing real projects, engaging with and supporting students from lower levels as a mentor, contributing to a team project, or participating in extra-curriculum activities such as the IMechE Formula Student team, the IMechE Unmanned Aircraft Systems Challenge competition, and Engineers without Borders challenge.

This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for the purposes of fully meeting the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

On this course you work with

  • practical laboratories
  • computer simulations
  • Lean and Six Sigma
  • rapid prototyping equipment to create accurate prototypes of product designs from CAD-generated information
  • 5-axis machining centre which completes the CAD/CAM cycle
  • a robotics laboratory to study computer-controlled manufacturing equipment
  • an automotive lab for engine, suspension and steering testing
  • a wind tunnel for aerodynamic studies
  • a flight simulator

Entry requirements

All students

GCSE Maths and GCSE English at grade C or 4.

112 UCAS points, including 64 points from two A levels or equivalent, or an alternative qualification such as an Access course. Must include A level Maths, or BTEC Subsidiary Engineering and a science subject.

If you don't meet these criteria you may be qualified for our BEng Automotive Engineering with Foundation Year.

Please note the University will only admit students who are aged 18 at the point of enrolment.

Fees and funding

Home/EU students

Our tuition fee for UK/EU students starting full-time undergraduate study in 2019/20 is £9,250 per year. During your placement year you will pay a reduced fee of £1,200.
