- Develop your knowledge of Maths, Science, and English and your ability to teach them.
This course allows higher level teaching assistants or foundation degree-holding teaching assistants to take their careers a step further. You'll attain Qualified Teacher Status and an Honours degree within two years.
How you learn
Your lecturer's view
You'll gain well-rounded practical and theoretical knowledge throughout the course, with work-based assessments as well as on-campus study. From your first year, you are introduced to the core curriculum areas of Mathematics, English, and Science as well as creativity.
In the second year you continue studying Mathematics, English, and Science, and examine inclusive learning environments. You also complete an enquiry project relevant to your or your schools professional development. You benefit from specialist primary teachers on campus and have the support of an academic tutor throughout.

Course leaders and tutors
As much of your training will take place at your employing school, their support is essential for the degree's successful completion. You'll undertake a six-week teaching placement at your school in your first year, as well as specialist early reading and numeracy placements elsewhere, which help further develop your core subject skills.
You'll also complete a second six-week placement in a different setting, with a different age group, and have the opportunity to take specialist four day placements and teaching conferences.
With numerous placements and conference opportunities, as well as frequent study alongside students learning different teaching disciplines to your own, there is ample opportunity for networking throughout the course.
By successfully completing this course, you become fully qualified to teach in a primary school setting.

GCSE English, mathematics and science at grade C or 4 or equivalent*, plus
• minimum of 240 CAT credits in a relevant area, such as a foundation or Bachelor's degree.
• you must be working in a school or foundation stage setting for a minimum of 20 hours a week. This may be in employment or in a voluntary role. Your setting must be within a reasonable travelling distance from university so that you can reach Sheffield centre for seminars each week and you can be supported in your setting by university link tutors.
• a letter of endorsement from a senior member of the school or foundation stage setting where you work. This must include an agreement to support you throughout the placements and with the school-based tasks. You must also have the capacity to work as an unqualified teacher within this setting.
If English is not your first language you need an IELTS average score of 7.0 with at least 6.5 in all skills or a TOEFL score of 235 (Internet based).
You must also successfully complete QTS skills tests in numeracy and literacy as designated by the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
* GCSE mathematics and English equivalents are
• 12 level 2 credits from an Access course
• equivalency test from www.equivalencytesting.co.uk
* GCSE science equivalents are
• 12 level 2 credits from an Access course
• Science equivalency test from www.equivalencytesting.co.uk
• OCR National Level 2 Science
• BTEC National Level 2 Science, Applied Science or Medical Science
* Level 2 Key Skills such as numeracy and literacy are not considered equivalents to GCSE for entry to this route. If you have any other qualification which you think may be equivalent to a GCSE, contact the student support administrator prior to submitting your application so that it can be formally approved by the admissions team.

Fees and funding
Our tuition fee for UK/EU students starting part-time study in 2019/20 is £4,625 per year (based on studying 60 credits per year).
