Five ways to make the most of the holidays
Thursday 18 June 2015
Summer is the perfect time to spread your wings and explore the world and your options, or simply gain some amazing new experiences. So unless you have a job lined up already, here are five of our favourite ways to make the most of the holidays.
1. Spend time abroad
It may sound cliché, but this could be your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend a few months abroad before hitting the world of work. A lot of students choose to spend their summer working in the USA for companies like Camp America and Yummy Jobs.
2. Volunteer at a music festival
Why pay to go to a festival when you can volunteer and enjoy it for free? You can volunteer with Oxfam to steward at music festivals around the UK whilst helping some of the poorest people in the world. And just think of all that experience you'll be adding to your CV.
3. Take a summer internship
OK so this might not sound as exciting, but you could earn some serious money on an internship whilst figuring out whether a particular career option is right for you. You'll get tonnes of experience, and if you make a good impression, they might even invite you back permanently. Keep an eye on the Career Hub for opportunities.
4. Work at the Uni as an ambassador
If you're staying in Sheffield over the summer and you want to earn some cash, what better way than working for the University? It's handy, familiar and the work is interesting as we have plenty of events to deliver along with other exciting projects. See the Career Hub for the latest vacancies.
5. Lead a team for the National Citizen Service
This comes highly recommended by other students! You could work as a team leader for the National Citizen Service (NCS) – a government programme bringing 16-and-17-year-olds together to make a difference in their community. This is a hugely rewarding and fun experience and definitely worth checking out.
