Working with the careers advisers
'I think the careers advisers are extremely useful. They help ensure you have the full package when you leave university, not just the grade you need. As most people have a 2:1 or above, it is really competitive and they have helped me try and make my application stand out.'
Working on my CV
'The career advisers have helped me in a variety of way, especially helping me steer my CV in the right direction. They gave me helpful tips on what people are looking for in the legal industry. One of the most effective hints was to give examples to any comment in my CV.
'I have also received advice about applying for training contracts, as this is a big part of my future, and networking advice. This has been really useful to me, as networking is a daunting experience the first few times.'
Making a difference to my future
'The career advisers told me that in law it's important to employers if you have legal work experience and other commitments outside uni work, so I dedicated myself to trying to get legal work experience and get involved in volunteering.
'I managed to get involved with the charity Missing People over a year ago and still volunteer with them on a regular basis. I saw the opportunity through the Hallam Volunteering link on Blackboard. I also applied to be part of the mentoring scheme, after getting an email about it from the careers advisers.
'The combination of these two things in my second year helped me gain the legal work experience I now attend weekly.'
