Information for external support workers
Support workers who are providing support for Sheffield Hallam should follow the Guidelines for external non-medical helper providers (DOCX).
Disabled Student Support
Students with issues or queries about their disability support should contact us themselves. We do not encourage support workers to advocate for students. Often the best way for students to access our service is via one of our daily drop ins Alternatively students can email or phone us 0114 225 3964. Support workers can accompany students to drop in with their consent, or can contact the service by phone or email.
College Student Support
The vast majority of courses have a Student Support Officer (SSO) attached to them - these members of staff are responsible for pastoral support for students on their course and are the first point of contact. If a student is unaware of who their Student Support Worker is then the easiest option is to contact their college helpdesk - this is usually the place where the student hands in their work.
Providers of 1:1 support are responsible for supplying their own rooms for mentoring and study skills sessions These should comply with DSA-QAG NMH QAF requirements. If required, rooms on campus can be booked (at a cost) through the SHU events team

The Student Wellbeing team provide counselling mental health support to SHU students - see their website for more details - they are based on Level 1 of the Owen building - students need to register for support.
Neither Disabled Student Support or Student Wellbeing are crisis services - follow the link above for options if a student needs emergency or out of hours support
Access to the Libraries
Support workers who require access to the libraries should attend the library helpdesk and register themselves as associate members with the category of 'support worker'. This is free to do and allows 24/7 access to the libraries (without borrowing rights).

External Support Providers (ESPs) Flagging Risk and/or Concerns to Sheffield Hallam University, Disabled Student Support (DSS)
External Support Providers should have their own processes in place for managing immediate risk to a student's life or risk to the safety of others.
If you need to inform Disabled Student Support about concerns that you have about a student that you are supporting, please do the following:
- External Support Providers should complete the concerns proforma (DOCX). These should then be sent by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
- Email heading: "Concern re: wellbeing/additional support needs".
- If the concern is urgent, please call DSS on 0114 225 3964, to alert the team.

External Support Providers should have their own consent to share/data protection processes in place.
