Your study needs assessment

What is a Study Needs Assessment

Your study needs assessment enables you to claim Disabled Students' Allowances and understand the funded support you may be entitled to at university.

Don't worry, it's not a test or an assessment. It is a confidential and informal, one-to-one discussion with a specialist Study Needs Assessor. It can last about 2 hours and together you will agree on a support package to meet your specific needs. Your assessor will discuss specialist equipment and demonstrate assistive software, 1:1 support and tuition and transport strategies along with discussing other strategies that can support you.

The recommendations from a study needs assessment will be bespoke to you and will comply with your funding body's guidance. You will be able to ask questions or suggest strategies or equipment that you feel you may benefit from or have worked for you in the past.

Before you attend your Study Needs Assessment

Before your study needs assessment you may want to think about how your disability affects you and the impact it has on your studies.

You may wish to consider some of the following questions:

  • What support has been useful for you in the past?
  • What challenges do you face on your course?
  • What do you think might help you to achieve on your course?

What to expect from your Study Needs Assessment

After your study needs assessment, you will be asked to complete some paperwork straight away, confirming what was recommend in the appointment, as well as letting us know where you would like a copy of the report sent to.

Your assessor will write a report within 10 working days. Your report will outline the recommended support costs so that your funding body can put your support in place as quickly as possible.
