The last two years have seen massive investment, including £6 million in outstanding new sports facilities and the completion of Heart of the Campus at Collegiate Crescent.

Heart of the Campus

Heart of the CampusThis new £27 million development at Collegiate Campus opened in September 2014, creating a fantastic experience for students at our Collegiate Campus and dramatically improving the skyline for the local community.

Architecturally, the building is separated into a series of pavilions connected by a central atrium and glazed links which allow views to listed villas beyond.

Each of these pavilions uses a palette of materials appropriate to the scale and the conservation area in which it sits, while all the blocks are united by public art commissioned from artist Chris Tipping.

Chris has used carving and etching onto the building fabric to reflect the site's historical context in the Sheffield steel industry - as well as the deer park which used to sit on the site, with a stunning large stag on one facade.

The building houses:

  • innovative teaching spaces
  • learning spaces to facilitate collaboration and using new technologies
  • a moot court
  • our Law Clinic
  • psychology labs
  • a catering outlet
  • a comprehensive Student Service Centre
  • access to gym facilities
  • dedicated Students' Union space
  • the main reception for the campus

Sustainable features of the build include:

  • ground source heat pumps for underfloor heating and cooling
  • a smart building management system which controls thermal comfort and lighting and minimises energy use
  • occupancy and daylight sensors for light and ventilation
  • low energy cooling and some natural ventilation
  • renewable energies including photovoltaic panels
  • secure cycle parking
  • green roof technologies
  • rainwater harvesting

At each stage of the build, staff, students, the local community and other stakeholders were involved through open forums, presentations and workshops.
