Climate Action Project

The Climate Emergency: Becoming Carbon Literate and Taking Part in a Climate Action Project

11 October to 5 December 2023

Global warming is already impacting our lives; record temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events are being seen around the world. The IPCC Report 2022 warned that the world is set to reach the 1.5ºC level within the next two decades - only the most drastic cuts in carbon emissions will help prevent an environmental disaster. The longer we delay action, the more dramatic the global impacts and the more extensive the mitigation and adaptation measures will have to be.

Achieving the UK’s goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 will require unprecedented changes across all sectors of the economy and society. Facing up to the scale of the challenge will necessitate the development of new skills and an educational focus that adequately prepares current and future generations to make decisions under uncertainty, incorporating sufficient flexibility to respond to emerging data on climate and ecological crises as they continue to intensify.

This virtual project is open for applications. The application deadline is 12:00 (UK Time) on 6 October 2023.

This Collaborative Online International Learning project includes 10 hours of Carbon Literacy training and a group project. Students will work in intercultural groups with students from our partner network to create personal and group action plans to reduce their carbon footprint and others. Students will also work in groups to support businesses in calculating their carbon emissions and explore ways companies can reduce their outputs.

The project is led by Caroline Linhares, Senior Lecturer, Department of Finance, Accounting and Business Systems, John Grant, Senior Lecturer, Department of Natural and Built Environment and Bee Gan, Head of Global Academic Development at Sheffield Hallam University. You are required to attend all the sessions listed below – all sessions are on Wednesday afternoons. Please check your timetable before applying.
