All of our courses require different levels of qualifications for entry and the details provided below are for guidance only.
The following qualifications from Germany will be considered for entry on to Undergraduate programmes
- Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife / Abitur with an overall grade of 2-3 ( at least 3 in English and mathematics)
- For German students, the Abitur (at 7 points or above with English as a special subject ) is accepted in place of IELTS 6.0.

Sheffield Hallam welcomes applications from international school students taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma and those achieving 28 points or more will usually be successful in obtaining an offer of a place on our undergraduate programmes. For information about IB points equivalencies against the UCAS tariff please visit the UCAS website.
Postgraduate taught programmes (masters)
The following qualifications from Germany will be considered for entry on to postgraduate taught programmes
- Magister Artium / Diplom / Erstes Staatsexamen (First State Examination)
- Fachhochschuldiplom (Diplom (FH)) with an overall grade of 'gut'
Where the entry requirement is a 2:2, we would accept grade 3 (Befriedigend), and where the entry requirement is a 2:1, we would accept grade 2 (Gut) We may also accept alternative qualifications for entry on to postgraduate courses. Preparation courses for degree programmes
If you do not meet the academic and English language requirements for direct entry onto undergraduate or postgraduate taught programmes, you can consider studying our International Foundation Programme in Art, Design and Media or Business, Law and Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, or Graduate Certificate International Pre-Masters in Business and English). On successful completion you can progress onto a range of degree programmes at Sheffield Hallam University.
Postgraduate research programmes
The following qualifications from Germany will be considered for entry on to postgraduate research programmes (MPhil/PhD)
- Masters degree from a recognised university
In most cases, students are required to submit a full application for PhD study, including a formal research proposal.

All applicants are required to gain a recognised English language qualification before entering any of our courses. For pre-sessional English programmes and courses below degree level, this must be one from a list of UK government recognised tests, most commonly IELTS. For degree level programmes (bachelors, masters and PhD), we consider a wide range of international qualifications.
