Arriving at Manchester Airport
Airport pick-up service
Every year we run an airport pick up service from Manchester Airport. Our friendly student crew meet you and bring you by private bus to the University.
The service is free, but if you do not book on to the service in advance then there may not be space for you on the bus and you will have to make your own travel arrangements.
We strongly encourage you to use the service. It makes your arrival more welcoming and enjoyable and you can meet other students on your journey to University.
The service is available to all Sheffield Hallam students arriving at Manchester Airport on
- Friday 9 August – Sunday 11 August
- Friday 13 September – Tuesday 17 September
- Thursday 9 January – Sunday 12 January 2020
Terms and conditions
The service is available at 10am, 1.30pm and 5pm on the selected dates stated above. If you arrive after 5pm we may not be able to meet you.
If your flight is more than one hour late we will do our best to accommodate you on the next available pickup of the day or the following morning, subject to availability and space.
This service is only available to students who have pre-booked by completing our arrival information form. Make sure you use your personal email address when you complete your details. You will receive a confirmation email with information about the service. Please check your inbox after you have registered.
If you arrive without booking the service or you book too late, we cannot guarantee you will get a seat on the private coach.
It is your responsibility to find our student guides as soon as possible after your arrival. Unfortunately, if you fail to do this and you miss the pick-up, the University cannot cover your travel costs to Sheffield.
Any travelling companions that are accompanying you, who are not Sheffield Hallam students themselves (such as parents, guardians, relatives, children above the age of two, friends etc.) will be charged £20 per person for using this service.
UK passport control
When you arrive at the airport in the UK, head to passport control. If you are a national from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea or the USA, and are staying in the UK for over 6 months, you can use the automated eGates.
If you are a short term student (up to 6 months) or from a country not listed above, you must not use the eGates, as you need to see an officer to get a stamp in your passport. This stamp gives you the permissions needed for your studies. To assist with this, download this document and present it to a Border Force Officer. This can be presented to staff either printed or shown on a mobile device.
Making your own way from Manchester Airport
If you arrive outside of the dates above, or if you would like to travel on your own, you can use the train or coach stations at the airport. The train and coach stations are clearly signposted at the airport. Follow the signs or ask at the information desk.
Please register your arrival details and select 'I will be at Manchester airport but NOT on these days or do not need the Transport Service' option then you will receive personalised travel instructions to help you make your own way from Manchester Airport. When you arrive in Sheffield, follow these directions to the University.
