A 'ragged gesture' is a counter position, an instance that manifests itself against the neat formulations of progress and handed down historical trajectories. It speaks to the ruptures of the past and present, in offering points of contention to the state we find ourselves in today.  This exhibition functions as an overture to a set of concerns that the artists are pursing – to move away from the styles of repeating pasts and navigate more slippery terrain. Each ragged gesture does not adhere or sit easily within known trajectories; they are in their character more impure in their askew glance to futurity.

The ragged gestures in Kunstraum exist together, functioning on mass like syncopated moments in a score. The pieces use as starting points incidents from architectural forms and industrial activity, art movements and philosophical speculations to encounters at the barricades, talk-show conversations, filmic moments and organic ephemeral forms. The exhibition begins an archive of ragged gestures, recognisable in and through a series of print works in light boxes, video fragments, a rectangular structure and related wall drawing, a large scale painting and series of investigates in vitrines.
