Background

My name is Ghayda, which is pronounced in Arabic as غيداء. I have worked a Lecturer at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah-Saudi Arabia since 2010, working for the Department of Communication Skills, under the faculty of Art and Humanities. I taught several subjects back home, in Sociology and Communication, for both senior and freshmen KAU students.

In September 2013 I received a scholarship from my department to pursue my postgraduate studies (PhD) in the UK. My Bachelors and Masters degrees are both in Sociology. For my PhD, I chose a subject which falls within an interdisciplinary area. As a social media-addicted internet user myself, I've always had a huge interest in online studies, perceiving them through different perspectives; Sociology, Psychology, Human-Computer-Interaction etc. Furthermore, as a Saudi woman who has been using the Internet since 1999, I am keen to explore and discover the online practices of Saudi Women.

I consider myself lucky to have two supervisors from different disciplines, Dr Luigina Ciolfi and Dr Geff Green.  Each of them broadens my horizons by their reviews and discussions, I am also lucky to have such kind, helpful and lovely PhD colleagues. As for Sheffield, I've always described it as a 'cosy' city, compared to London, where I lived for my first year in the UK.
