ADRC Postgraduate Research
Students on both our MA and research degree programmes benefit from a friendly, welcoming and energetic community where debate, critical thinking, working together and public-facing projects are encouraged. We bring art and design disciplines together to create a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment.
The majority of our PhD students undertake practice-led research, using art and design making processes to explore the complexities of visual language and its relationship to wider social questions. Regular seminars for PhD students encourage a critical understanding of method, structure and discourse across the disciplines of fine art and design.
This interdisciplinary format generates healthy challenges and an advanced understanding of research processes. Our research students are actively engaged with issues of research dissemination and impact, exhibiting nationally and internationally, presenting at significant national and international conferences and publishing papers independently and with supervisors.
Doctoral research is supported within many of the Art & Design Research Centre’s established research projects. Some examples include
- Lab4Living: an inquiry into user-centred design to promote health and wellbeing
- Transmission: a historically respected project exploring the relationship between fine art making, language and response and including study of archives and translation
- GRAVITY: an inquiry into engagement with materials and artefacts and the nature of analogue and digital making processes and forms of display. GRAVITY offers the possibility of collaboration with MERI
- Art School: a newer area of research exploring the histories and possibilities of Art School
Our postgraduate students can access all the technical facilities available in the wider University including manufacturing facilities, photography and film studios, rapid prototyping and laser cutting technologies and we rent fine art studio space in the City’s Cultural Quarter.
