Rapid 3D Digitization of Museums Sheffield Metalwork Collection A designated collection of metalworks from Sheffield and all over the world
The project digitized and developed interactive 3D content for the Designated Metalwork collection managed by Museums Sheffield (MS) with particular relevance to those working in the STEM fields. The project used state-of-the-art 3D scanning technologies with models being exported for visualization over the Internet. The outcomes of this pioneering project leaves a permanent digital record of the MS metalwork collection forming a key component of the city’s collaborative ambition to celebrate Sheffield’s unique place in the world history of metal-making under the banner of "Created and Made in Sheffield "– a project to enhance knowledge, culture and understanding of the city’s contemporary and historical contribution to the development of national economy and culture with a strong community focus.
The project has provided new ways of accessing object details and objects that are either too delicate or unsuitable for handling, improving collection access and public understanding. Contents of objects in 3D viewable on a web browser can be accessed through following the link to Museums Sheffield Metalwork Collection in 3D.
The major outputs and outcomes of the project are listed as follows
- Digitized 3D Models: 3D modes of appropriate quality for publication and archival and formatted in COLLADA for digital asset interchange. The project has documented the method and parameters to ensure future work is of equivalent quality and ensure long-term preservation of the dataset by appropriate back up procedures
- Metadata specification and content description: Content dissemination by publicising website among educational institutions and stakeholders. The project documentation has been made available on the web such that others can follow identified best practices
- Web specification and development: Implementation according to requirements specifications and published within Museums Sheffield website
- Project documentation: Make available via project websites at Museums Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and JISC-Joint Information Systems Committee
