The North Trent Cancer Network Consumer Research Panel (NTCN CRP) was developed against a backdrop of evolving interest and commitment towards patient and public involvement in health and social care research. The panel has now been in full operation for 10 years and is made up of twenty five former and current cancer and palliative care patients and carers, from diverse demographic and socio-economic backgrounds.
These patients and carers have a variety of cancer types including breast, lung, prostate, oesophageal, colorectal, gynaecological, and myeloma, and many have metastatic disease. Their ages range from 22 to 75 years old. The panel provides the opportunity for individuals to influence the research agenda and contribute to the research process from the outset - from the generation of research questions, through to protocol development and advice on issues such as ethics and patient recruitment, to participation as researchers, presenters and co-authors of peer-reviewed papers.
The panel has also provided a valuable resource for health professionals and researchers who wish to involve patients in any or all stages of the research process (Collins & Ahmedzai, 2005, Collins & Stevens, 2006, Caldon et al, 2010)
