Our work matters
The NHS has a budget of over £120 billion and is the fifth largest employer in the world, with a workforce of around 1.3 million. Adult social care costs a further £15 billion each year. By any measure, health and social care is a very big business.
Over the last 20 years there has been an increasing emphasis on ensuring that this massive level of resource is utilised as efficiently and as effectively as possible. So research into health care is increasingly important and topical. It needs to meet the rapidly growing demand of an ageing population, with increasing life expectancy and high expectations that sophisticated medical technology will keep them healthy.
We are focused on the practical. We believe that through collaboration and a continued focus on the implementation of research into the services that people experience every day, we can make a difference. For us, health and health service research is of limited benefit if it is not implemented through teaching, clinical practice, or the services that patients receive.
