To assess the economic impact of The Open Championship on host areas using the economic strand of the eventIMPACTS.com methodology developed by SIRC.
A combination of face to face interviews and online surveys, consultations with organisers and scrutiny of event documentation were used to establish the amount, origin and destination of event related expenditure.
Although the event specific reports produced for The R&A are confidential, the findings demonstrate that The Open injects tens of millions to host areas by way of direct spending attributable to event specific visitors and organisers. Indeed figures released by the R&A using our research indicate that the direct economic impact in Scotland in 2010 was more than £28m, whilst Kent and Lancashire had impacts of c. £20m and £21m in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
