Sport and Recreation Alliance
SIRC staff conducted the Sport and Recreation Alliance's 2009 Survey of Sports Clubs. This was the second of these surveys and achieved a significant improvement in the scale and reliability of the evidence on the state of the sports club sector in the UK.
Our work with the Sport and Recreation Alliance is a good example of our ability to undertake large scale online surveying of a complex sector, sports clubs. The initial and continuing encouragement of key sports club personnel to complete the survey entailed a close working relationship with a range of National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs), as well as gaining the confidence of the club personnel who completed the responses.
A testimony to the working relationship established with the Sport and Recreation Alliance and NGBs is that, for the first time, detailed questions were asked in the survey concerning club finances. The survey achieved 1,975 complete responses, which informed the key stakeholders above about the financial status of their clubs, as well as the facilities used by clubs and the numbers of members and volunteers in clubs. In addition, the survey identified in detail the challenges faced by clubs as perceived by their key personnel, who completed the clubs' responses. The full report of the survey is available to download here.
This work demonstrates not only our technical ability to design and administer a large scale online survey, and analyse and present its findings, but also our skills in working in partnership with a number of NGBs and encouraging a large number of club officials to participate in the survey.
