Play for fun – whatever your experience

Our social sport programme gives you the chance to take part in over 17 different sports in a relaxed environment, whether that’s trying something new or playing your favourite sport.

With over 30 sessions each week run by Student Sport Activators, who ensure they're accessible and applicable to everyone, from beginners through to seasoned players. Plus there's always a coach on hand to help you learn new skills, and all equipment is provided. Sessions are free for Hallam Active all-inclusive and student unlimited members, £2.50 for non-members.

Do I need to bring equipment?

All equipment is provided at every session; just bring a pair of trainers and some sports clothes and get involved.

A-Z Sports

  • Aikido

    Japanese form of self defence and martial art that uses locks, holds, throws and the opponents own movements

  • Badminton

    The sessions mainly involve playing doubles matches and singles if there's low demand. You will get as much court time as possible and coaching can be provided if you would like.

  • Baseball

    All players welcome, no previous experience required. Come down and make history with Hallam's first ever Baseball team. There is a free shuttle bus every hour from the HUBS to the Sports Park where training takes place.

  • Basketball

    Mostly sessions will involve match play and small sided games. These sessions focus on you getting as much court time as possible so there's always chance to learn and improve your game no matter what level you are at.

  • Boxing Fitness

    These sessions are open to males and females and delivered in a friendly and fun way. So, if you want to learn some basic self-defence, relieve stress and burn calories whilst learning boxing skills then these sessions are perfect for you.

  • Capoeira

    A Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music

  • Dodgeball

    A team sport which players try to hit opponents with a ball while trying to avoid being hit themselves.

  • Women's Football

    Just play football in a fun and relaxing, women's only session. These sessions are focused on giving you as much playing time as possible, usually in small sided games. They are perfect for all ability levels.

  • Futsal

    Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced, five-a-side football game, normally played on an indoor pitch. A large emphasis is placed on technical skill and ability in situations of high pressure, and is subsequently an excellent breeding ground for football skills.

  • Group Running

    Our Group Running Sessions are suitable for all running abilities and are free to everyone. Our Student Sport Activators plan and adapt the routes dependent upon ability. So if you’ve always wanted to get into running these fun sessions are ideal for you. Experience the beauty of Sheffield whilst getting fit at the same time.

  • Just Play Football

    No need to bring anyone with you, simply turn up and let our Student Sport Activators match you into equal teams. These sessions are focused on giving you as much playing time as possible, usually in small sided games. These sessions are perfect for all abilities and give you a great opportunity to just play football.
  • Korfball

    Korfball is a sport with similarities to netball and basketball. Come down and learn about one of the fastest growing sports in a friendly fun environment. Expect plenty of game time to help hone your new found skills. With links to the Korfball club there's a real social feel to the sessions.

  • Netball

    Are you interested in playing netball, making friends and getting fit? Our Student Sport Activators will introduce you to participants, place into teams and rotate teams on and off the court. Mainly these sessions involve small sided netball games between equally matched teams.

  • Park Run

    The Sheffield Hallam 5km Park Run takes place in Endcliffe Park, just off Ecclesall Road, every Saturday at 9am. The run is open to everyone, free, and is safe and easy to take part in.

  • Squash

    Social Squash is based at the Hallamshire Tennis and Squash Centre. Come and play Squash in a fun and relaxed setting. No need to bring anyone with you, as our Student Sport Activator will introduce you to participants and rotate you on and off court.

  • Strong by Zumba

    High intensity interval training, featuring bootcamp exercises choreographed to music, which gradually intensifies to give a total body workout.

  • Swimming

    We have teamed up with Ponds Forge to provide you with affordable swimming. Come for a swim for £3, with 2 sessions available each weekday. Bring your SHUCard to the timetabled session to receive this offer. If you want to learn to swim, Ponds Forge run adult learn to swim classes; with discounts provided for SHUcard holders.   • Tennis

    Social Tennis is based at the Hallamshire Tennis and Squash Centre. Come and play Tennis in a fun and relaxed setting. Our Student Sport Activator will introduce you to participants and rotate you on and off court.

  • Table Tennis and Darts

    Based at our Student Union these sessions are social, fun and inclusive to all. Meet new friends, have a few drinks and relax whilst playing Table Tennis or Darts for FREE.
  • Touch Rugby

    Touch Rugby is a high-energy game which can be played by anyone. Whether you are an experienced player and want to improve your handling skills; or a beginner just wanting to experience rugby without the physicality.
  • Ultimate Frisbee

    Experience one of the fastest growing sports at University in a friendly environment. The Social Sport Activators will help you learn the essential skills and rules needed to play Ultimate Frisbee. These sessions are closely linked with the Ultimate Frisbee club so there's a real social feel to the sessions.
  • Wheelchair Basketball

    Everyone is welcome to come to the sessions where you will find disabled and non-disabled people taking part together. If you are willing to jump into one of the wheelchairs, then you are able to play. It is a fast, physical and challenging sport being played worldwide by thousands of people.
