Clubs, sports and activities

Here at Team Hallam, we have something for everyone. From competitive or performance sport to give it a go’s and social sport sessions there are sports clubs to suit all interests and abilities. Whether your motivation is to make friends, keep fit, try something new or continue to develop your sporting skills, there is a lot for you to get involved with while studying at Sheffield Hallam University.

Play socially: Wanting to give a new sport a try or play for fun with friends? Social sport allows you to play in a relaxed environment in over 15 different sports. Alternatively, if you want something slightly more competitive, we have our sports leagues across several sports where you can create your own team with housemates, friends or course friends!

Further Sporting Opportunities: Looking for a career in sport? Whether you want to develop yourself through gaining coaching qualifications or wanting work experience in sport development or events, we have plenty of opportunities available to you via our Leadership and Development Academy.

American football (mixed)

American Football is a growing club at Hallam, with one squad that is open to all abilities, from complete rookies to experienced players. The team compete in BUCS leagues against other university teams across the region, with all players getting the opportunity for game time throughout the season. Some equipment is available for beginners to borrow throughout the season.

American football (women's)

Women's American Football is open to all abilities and provides excellent opportunities for beginners to try out Flag American Football. The club compete in the Opal Series, which is the National Championship competition for women's flag football teams, organised by the British American Football Association. Furthermore, the girls help beginners learn the rules and tactics of the sport in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Athletics

Athletics train and compete in multiple disciplines, including sprinting, middle- and long-distance events, field events and cross-country running. The club is open to all abilities, from people who just want to keep fit and have fun, to performance athletes competing at international level. The club has a partnership with City of Sheffield Athletics Club which brings in a range of experienced coaching staff. There are a variety of competitions throughout the year, from BUCS national indoor and outdoor, as well as cross country events. The University club also host The Steel Cup in Sheffield, their own annual inter-university indoor athletics competition. Individuals can also enter other competitions throughout the season as part of their club or Sheffield City Athletics Club.

Social Sessions

For complete beginners wanting to get into athletics, there are social run groups such as Couch to 5k. For those wanting to have a bit of a routine we also run weekly running clubs for you to get involved in. Contact sport@shu.ac.uk for more information.

Badminton

Badminton is a mixed club that caters for all abilities. With three men's teams and one women's team there are plenty of opportunities to represent the university in BUCS leagues and tournaments. Furthermore, committed players also have opportunity to play in local leagues and competitions for local clubs.  

Social Sport

There are regular social sport sessions which are run for less competitive and developing players but are overseen by the club to ensure you feel a part of Team Hallam Opportunities are available for students to develop coaching skills through leading the sessions as a Student Sport Activator volunteer.

Basketball (Men's)

Men's Basketball has three teams regularly competing in BUCS leagues with a team competing in the Sheffield Local League. The club has a great relationship with the Sheffield Sharks and provides an opportunity for High Performing Athletes to play at a high level. 

Social sport

We also run regular social sport sessions for less competitive and developing players to ensure anyone who wants to take part in Basketball can, these are run by the club to ensure you feel a part of the Basketball Community at Hallam. Opportunities available for students to develop coaching skills through leading the sessions as a Student Sport Activator volunteer.

Basketball (Women's) 

Women's Basketball has one team playing at a competitive level in BUCS. The club is open to all abilities with both a competitive and a development offer available for those interested in playing Basketball. Whether you have played previously, just want to keep fit, or give it a try there is something for you. The club runs in partnership with Sheffield Hatters Women's Basketball Club, giving players access to high quality coaching and facilities. Committed players can play for Sheffield Hatters WBBL squad and local league team.

Boxing

Boxing is a mixed club for both men and women to box competitively or recreationally. Regular box fit social sport sessions are run for people new to the sport. The club has a partnership with Sheffield City ABC boxing gym, which is run by head coach Brendan Warburton. The club enters several competitions and events throughout the year, including BUCS championships, Varsity competition and England Boxing series, with people being selected for individual competitions based on their abilities.

Canoe 

Canoe is open to all abilities and runs a wide range of activities throughout the year, from indoor canoe polo training to white water trips in the UK and abroad. The club also compete in BUCS and other inter-university competitions in Canoe Polo, White Water Races and Slalom competitions. Equipment is available to borrow for beginners. The club is open to everyone and is not dependent on previous experience. Opportunities are available through the club for students to gain qualifications such as river leading, white water safety, first aid and coaching badges.

Climbing 

Sheffield is one of the best climbing cities in the UK, with access to world class climbing facilities and brilliantly placed for climbing in the Peak District. Climbing is open to all abilities, from complete beginners to elite level climbers. The club run indoor and outdoor activities and trips in a range of disciplines, including bouldering, top roping and lead/sport climbing which is open to all members. The club has a Performance Squad of climbers who receive coaching and conditioning at The Climbing Works, and compete in inter-university BUCS competitions as well as other national and international events.

Cricket (Men's)

Men’s Cricket has two Men's teams regularly competing in BUCS and a further two teams competing solely in local league competitions. All teams compete in various local indoor 6-a-side leagues throughout the winter. During the summer the squads enter the BUCS Outdoors leagues which typically run from May to June. The club has partnerships with local teams that see a number of our players play in the Sheffield Leagues should you want to further develop yourself while at university.

Cricket (Women's)

Women’s Cricket has two teams regularly competing in BUCS with further opportunities to play for local teams or in events. During the summer the squads enter the BUCS Outdoors leagues which typically run from May to June. The club has partnerships with local teams that see several of our players play in the Sheffield Leagues should you want to further develop yourself while at University.

Cycling

Cycling is open to range of abilities and covers several disciplines. The club mainly focuses on organising rides and events for Road, Cross Country and Downhill cycling, but there are riders in the club involved in other styles of cycling, such as BMX and Cyclocross. Sheffield is one of the best cities in the UK to get out cycling, with the Peak District nearby for mountain bike trails and routes from the 2014 Tour De France Yorkshire Grand Depart. More competitive cyclists can enter BUCS events, and other national and local competitions through the club.

Dodgeball

Dodgeball is a friendly recreational club open to all abilities. No previous experience of playing dodgeball is needed and beginners are always welcome throughout the year. The club is open to non-members and social players throughout the year. Teams are selected at the weekly training sessions for BUCS tournaments and British Dodgeball leagues and events, there are often opportunities for a range of abilities to compete.

Equestrian

Equestrian offers a variety of riding disciplines for all abilities and enters two competitive teams into the BUCS Dressage and Show jumping event series. Lessons are available for complete beginners and more advanced riders. The club is both competitive and recreational and offers a range of social events.

Football (men's)

Men's Football is a hugely popular club at Sheffield Hallam, with four teams competing in BUCS leagues. There are further opportunities for players to develop while at University with Sheffield FC and other local football clubs. For developing players and people who want to play recreationally, there are opportunities to enter weekly 11-a-side and 6-a-side Sport Leagues.

Social sport

Multiple sessions a week for mixed ability of players, at City Campus and Collegiate Campus. Opportunities available for students to develop coaching skills through leading the sessions as a Student Sport Activator volunteer.

Football (women's)

Sheffield Hallam University is a FA Women’s High-Performance Hub and we have three teams competing in BUCS leagues. The club has great partnerships with both Doncaster Belles and Sheffield FC, giving players access to high quality coaching and playing opportunities along with other local club links. There is a club Development Squad, for improving players and people who want to play recreationally with the ambition of making the BUCS teams in the future.

Social sport

Weekly session for mixed ability of players, at Collegiate Campus. Opportunities available for students to develop coaching skills through leading the sessions as a Student Sport Activator volunteer.

Futsal

Futsal is made up of three men's and one women's BUCS squads and a further two development teams which play in a local league. Futsal is a growing 5-a-side game played with a smaller ball to football, which reduces the bounce and focuses more on a player’s skill.

Social sport

Regular social sport sessions are also run weekly for developing players or people who just want to play casually however are still seen to be part of the wider club. Opportunities available for students to develop coaching skills through leading the sessions as a Student Sport Activator volunteer.

Golf

Golf are a well-established club at Hallam who train regularly at Hillsborough Golf Club. The club have two mixed teams who compete in weekly BUCS fixtures throughout the year. The club aims to put together an extensive playing schedule for players of all abilities to get involved with. The clubs welcome anyone interested in Golf and invites players to join them at Hillsborough Golf Club for regular driving range opportunities.

Hockey (men's)

Men's Hockey is a large club at Sheffield Hallam, with three teams competing in BUCS leagues. The club runs in partnership with Sheffield Hockey Club, giving players access to quality coaching and facilities, including the Sports Park and former Olympic hockey pitch housed at Abbeydale Sports Club. The partnership offers committed players the opportunity to play nationally.

Hockey (women's)

Women's Hockey is made up of four teams competing in BUCS leagues. The club holds weekly training sessions at the Sports Park & Abbeydale Sports Club with matches typically being played on a Wednesday afternoon. The club runs in partnership with Sheffield Hockey Club, giving players access to quality coaching and facilities, including the former Olympic hockey pitch housed at Abbeydale Sports Club. The partnership offers committed players the opportunity to play nationally. A second pitch is located at Sheffield Hallam Sports Park at Bawtry Road in partnership with Rotherham Hockey Club, where further opportunities are available.

Ice Hockey

Sheffield Bears Ice Hockey Club runs across both Sheffield Hallam University and University of Sheffield, with students from both universities competing together in the British University Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA) leagues. The club have teams competing in Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the BUIHA leagues, catering for a wide range of abilities and making them one of the largest university ice hockey clubs in the country. During the annual inter-university Varsity tournament the club splits into separate teams from Hallam and University of Sheffield, who compete against each other in front of large crows from both universities.

Social sport

The club run a couple of 'Give it a Go' sessions each year in semester one, providing opportunity for new players to try out the sport.

Korfball

Korfball is a growing sport which is becoming increasingly popular at universities. It is a mixed sport, with men and women playing on the same court, and the setup of the game is a mix between basketball and netball. The club has three teams competing in BUCS championships and student league. They also have three teams that compete in the Central England Korfball League and the Yorkshire Korfball League. A development squad to provide opportunities for developing players.

Social sport

The Korfball Club are welcoming to beginners, with most players never having tried the sport before university. Weekly social sport sessions are run by the club at Collegiate sports hall for people to drop in and play casually, or to try the sport for the first time. Opportunities available for students to develop coaching skills through leading the sessions as a Student Sport Activator volunteer.

Lacrosse (men's)

Men's Lacrosse have one team who compete regularly in BUCS leagues. Lacrosse is a fast pace, high skilled and physical sport which is growing rapidly in the UK. The club is open to both beginners and experienced players, focusing on nurturing and developing new talents. We welcome players of all abilities and aim to give everyone interested an opportunity. Some equipment will also be provided to those new to the game for them to try it out.

Lacrosse (women's)

Women's Lacrosse have one team who compete regularly in BUCS leagues, and a development squad for developing players who play in friendly matches and tournaments throughout the year. Lacrosse is a fast pace, high skilled and physical sport. The club is open to all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced players. The development training sessions are for players who are new to the sport to help them learn skills and the rules of the game, and lend out equipment to beginners.

Netball

Netball is one of Team Hallam's largest sport clubs, with six teams playing in BUCS leagues and additional teams in local leagues providing opportunities for developing players. There are plenty of playing opportunities for students, such as joining the development squads or entering a team in the Sport Leagues with friends, neighbours, colleagues, or course mates available on campus.

Rowing

Rowing is a popular and growing club, with opportunities for all abilities, from complete beginners to advanced rowers, and welcome both social and competitive members. The club go on several residential trips throughout the year, to compete in BUCS events including the Regatta, BUCS 4's and BUCS 8's Head, as well as some residential training camps.

Rugby League

Rugby League is suitable for all abilities, with one team competing regularly in the regional BUCS league. Rugby League is a fast-paced game with constant running, tackling, and playing to speed to score as many points as possible. There are opportunities in the club for everyone, from experienced players to Rugby Union converts, and people who have never touched a rugby ball.

Men's Rugby Union is a popular club at Hallam, with two teams competing in BUCS leagues. The club benefit from a high standard of coaching, and work with regional RFU staff to ensure all abilities can be catered for at Hallam. There are links to Sheffield RFC and Rotherham Titans to giving players the opportunity to play nationally.

Rugby Union (women's)

Women's Rugby Union is suitable for all abilities, with one team competing regularly in the regional BUCS league. Women's rugby is a fast growing and unique sport, and the club is always looking for new players from all backgrounds, regardless of their level of skill and experience. The club committee work to ensure all abilities can be catered for at Hallam, even people who have never touched a rugby ball before.

Sailing

Sailing  is open to all abilities and runs a range of activities throughout the year. All equipment needed is available to borrow for new members wanting to try out the sport for the first time. Opportunities are available through the club for students to gain safety and sailing qualifications.

Snowsports

SHUSnow is one of the largest clubs at Hallam, and is open to everyone, from complete beginners to experienced skiers and snowboarders. Training programmes are available for both race and freestyle winter sports. SHU Snow compete against other UK universities throughout the year in multiple events including KINGS, BUDS and BUISC competitions.

Squash

Squash has both a women’s and men’s team regularly competing in BUCS leagues and tournaments. Some players also can play in local leagues. The club is run in partnership with the Hallamshire Squash Club, providing access to high quality coaching and facilities for Hallam students.

Swimming

Swimming is a popular and successful club at Sheffield Hallam, with opportunities for a range of abilities and a varied training programme to cover all disciplines. The club is one of Team Hallam's Performance Aligned Sports meaning it benefits from increased investment for high performance sport. The club is run in partnership with the City of Sheffield Swimming Club, ensuring access to world class facilities and high-quality coaching. The head coach of the elite programme partnered with City of Sheffield is Mike Taylor an international level coach. The club compete in BUCS Long Course and Short Course swimming events, as well as attending regional galas. They also host their own annual Steel Cup gala event attended by other universities and take part in the BuSL league which is for those swimmers who aren’t quite at that performance level but still want to swim competitively.

Table Tennis

Table Tennis is a mixed club with two Men's Teams and one Women's Team regularly competing in BUCS leagues and tournaments. Some players also have opportunity to play in local leagues. The Club welcomes anyone who either wants to play competitively or just wants to get involved.

Tennis

Tennis is a mixed club with three Men's Teams and one Women's Team regularly competing in BUCS leagues and tournaments. The club is run in partnership with the Hallamshire Tennis Club, providing access to high quality coaching and facilities for Sheffield Hallam students. Committed players also have opportunity to play in local leagues through Hallamshire club links.

Trampolining

Trampolining is open to all abilities and runs a range of activities throughout the year to cater for everyone, from complete beginners to those wanting to compete at a national level. They enter numerous interuniversity competitions throughout the year, including the NEUT league and BUCS Championships. The Trampolining Club also co-host their own Sheffield Open trampolining event with the University of Sheffield. This is an accessible club who welcomes anyone interested in attending a session.

Triathlon

Triathlon is open to all abilities and runs a range of activities throughout the year to cater for everyone, from complete beginners to those wanting to compete at a national level. The club enters numerous BUCS events throughout the year including BUCS Duathlon, BUCS Sprint Triathlon and BUCS Standard Distance Triathlon. The club welcomes students of all experience, interest and ability and aims to ensure you enjoy taking part as much as possible.

Volleyball

Volleyball has one Men’s Team and one Women's Team regularly competing in BUCS leagues and events. The club is one of Team Hallam's Performance Aligned Sports meaning it benefits from increased investment for high performance sport, ensuring access to great facilities and high-quality coaching. The club has a partnership with Sheffield Volleyball Club, the head coach is Keith Trenam for both Club and University programmes.

Water Polo

Water Polo has one Men's Team and one Women's Team regularly competing in BUCS leagues and events. The club is one of Team Hallam's Performance Aligned Sports meaning it benefits from increased investment for high performance sport. Furthermore, the club are partnered with City of Sheffield Water Polo so benefit from high quality coaching and facilities. This partnership also offers committed players the opportunity to compete nationally. The club travel across the north of the UK to compete and match times can vary depending on the opposition university.
