Course description

Tourism has experienced continued expansion and diversification, becoming one of the largest and fastest growing economic sectors in the world. According to UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO, 2014) the worldwide international tourist arrivals are expected to see a 3.3% increase a year between 2010 and 2030, and reach 1.8 billion by 2030, with emerging destinations growing at the fastest rate.

This creates many career opportunities for qualified managers in the hospitality and tourism industries in both developed and developing countries. The MSc International Hospitality and Tourism Management is designed to prepare graduates for management and senior management positions in a complex and dynamic industry.

The course helps you to start or develop a career in the international hospitality and tourism industries. You build a strong theoretical and practical foundation by studying both business management modules, and tourism and hospitality modules.

You learn to apply and critically challenge your understanding of the industries in practical contexts, particularly in the work-related learning module and during your industry placement. You also critically examine the sustainability of the international hospitality and tourism industries. Throughout the course enhance your employability skills, such as communications and team-working, which are vital for rapid career development.

The placement option offers you an additional opportunity to develop your practical skills, either in the UK or abroad. We help you gain a placement by running employability workshops and have dedicated placement team to support you. Placement opportunities exist in organisations such as • Hilton • Marriott • Conrad • Anantara resorts • Como resorts • the Gleneagles hotel • the Hotelbeds Group • Omega Travel • Cosmos • Visit Peak District and Derbyshire.

You graduate with the skills and knowledge to plan, manage and promote products, services, businesses and destinations in the international hospitality and tourism industries in a competitive and sustainable manner.

This course is accredited by the Institute of Hospitality, the international hospitality professional membership body for managers and aspiring managers, and is recognised by the Tourism Management Institute.

Normally an honours degree or recognised equivalent qualification

We welcome enquiries from those who have substantial management experience but who do not have the normal entry requirements. We may invite you for an interview to discuss your particular background, experience and qualifications. You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam. Find out more

Through accreditation of prior learning (APL), you may be able to claim entry with credit or exemptions based on your existing qualifications, knowledge and experience.

If you do not meet the above criteria you can apply for the Graduate Diploma in Business and English. After passing this diploma we automatically offer you a place on one of our business-related masters degrees.

Work experience route

If English is not your first language you will need an IELTS 6.5 score with a minimum of 6.0 in all skills or equivalent.

Non work experience route

If English is not your first language you will need an IELTS 6.0 score with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills or equivalent.

If your English language skill is currently below the required level we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.

Core modules

Business and management strategy (30 credits)
This module aims to develop your key management skills in marketing, HRM and business analysis in a problem-based learning environment. You analyse and then present solutions to real life management problems that organisations are facing.

Approaches to tourism and hospitality business management (15 credits)
This module is an introduction to the tourism industry in all its forms. You develop your knowledge and understanding of the variety of approaches used in a range of tourism businesses to manage successful portfolios, enterprises and organisations. You examine business and organisational models of operation, analyse internal and external environmental influences, examine organisational financial performance and structure, and investigate approaches to corporate social responsibility.

Enterprise and entrepreneurship in tourism and hospitality (15 credits)
This module is designed to enable you to appreciate the role and contribution of enterprise and entrepreneurship to the hospitality and tourism industries, and to reflect on the factors that influence entrepreneurship and innovation within the industry. You develop a critical understanding of theories and concepts of entrepreneurship and innovation. It assists you to identify similarities, differences and relationships in these theories and concepts, as well as in their application to hospitality and tourism industries.

Work-related learning (15 credits)
Within a professional context, this module cultivates your ability to critically reflect on the knowledge and skills attained during your work related learning experience and how this may contribute to your personal and professional development at a postgraduate / management level in meeting your career aspirations during and upon completion of the course.

Research methods (15 credits)
Crucial in providing underpinning knowledge and understanding for success within your dissertation, you develop analytical and technical research capabilities that are related to doing research. By engaging with methodological and philosophical issues you develop your own research projects based on a critical examination and evaluation of published research.

Dissertation (45 credits)
The dissertation provides an invaluable opportunity for you to undertake a major research project on a topic relevant to your work or interests. You review different research methods and techniques, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge you have gained, and to develop your research skills.

Tourism planning and development (15 credits)
The aim of the module is to examine approaches to tourism development, policy-making and planning in relation to the objectives sought, the methods used, and the practical outcomes that result. You evaluate the diverse and often conflicting environmental, social, commercial and political influences affecting tourism development, policy-making and planning processes. You also consider the processes involved in tourism development, policy-making, and planning, and in particular the extent to which they promote participation, inclusiveness and equity.

Leadership and management skills development (15 credits)
This module explores and develops the skills required of leaders and manager in the hospitality and tourism industries. You investigate how personality, motivation, emotional intelligence, group dynamics, conflict management and networking are used to effectively manage and lead teams.

Consumer behaviour, marketing and technology in hospitality (15 credits)
This aim of this module is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to critically analyse the contemporary hospitality marketing landscape. This is achieved by exploring technological innovations, marketing practice and consumer behaviour.

Destination marketing (15 credits)
You learn to critically evaluate the principles and practices of the marketing of destinations - mainly, but not exclusively, to leisure and business markets. This is achieved by providing the insights and analytical tools to understand and contextualise the key considerations in the marketing of tourism destinations and the role of DMOs (Destination Marketing Organisations).
