“The apprenticeship has allowed me to build on my existing academic and clinical skills in my chosen field. The opportunity to work full-time and study at the same time enabled me to access a variety of training and experiences. A degree apprenticeship allows you to engage in spontaneous teaching opportunities that I might have missed out on if I had chosen the traditional academic pathway which usually consists of short placements.
"I found studying on block release was a great way to meet other students and access university resources. The flexibility of the apprenticeship ensured I was being trained to the demands of the department, learning new skills that I could put into practice straight away.
"One of the biggest benefits of an apprenticeship is the opportunity to earn while you learn as I wouldn’t have been able to progress in my career if I had to study full-time. I feel I have developed holistically as I have developed clinical competencies which have been underpinned with academic knowledge. I also found working at the hospital full-time was a great way to develop meaningful relationships with my colleagues and I felt part of a team as soon as I joined.
"I received a great deal of support from all of the clinical and academic tutors at Hallam during my apprenticeship course. The tutors were approachable and showed they genuinely wanted us to succeed in not only the course but also our future careers.
"As a qualified physiologist I am now working towards being able to lead more tests independently. I am also hoping to work towards a post graduate qualification to further my understanding and advance my career.”
