Contextual offers

How and why we make preferential offers based on applicant backgrounds and circumstances

We’re committed to ensuring that every student with the potential to succeed at Sheffield Hallam is able to do so. We’re also committed to providing opportunities for applicants from the Sheffield City Region to progress into higher education.

We believe a University education should provide you with unique opportunities as well as setting you up for your future career, that's why we adopt an applied learning approach, blending theory and practice. Access to this study should not be limited if you have experienced challenges in your journey to university. We will therefore take your circumstances as an applicant into account when we consider your application.

What criteria do we use for your application?

If you meet one or more of the following criteria, we will make you a lower conditional offer or, if you have already completed your qualifications, accept you with lower grades

  • You declare that you are a care leaver on your UCAS form
  • You are a refugee or been granted Humanitarian Protection
  • You declare a disability on your UCAS form
  • You are over the age of 21
  • You live in an area where people are less likely to go to university
  • You successfully apply to our SHU Progress support scheme

We are also committed to providing opportunities to study for applicants who live in the local area so if you live in the Sheffield City Region we will make you a lower offer on the same basis. We value the great contribution our students make in the local community, and see this economic and social impact as part of our responsibility to the levelling up of the region.

How to check if you are eligible?

To check your postcode to see if you are in a low participation area, you can visit the Office for Students postcode search tool.

You can enter your postcode and the map will reload for your area. In the box in the top right-hand corner it will detail the quintile for the area. For September 2021 entry onwards, your postcode should be assessed as 1 under POLAR4.

The Sheffield City Region is defined as all postcodes within the following Local Authorities:

  • Barnsley
  • Bassetlaw
  • Bolsover
  • Chesterfield
  • Derbyshire Dales
  • Doncaster
  • North East Derbyshire
  • Rotherham
  • Sheffield

What will this mean for your offer?

If you meet one or more of our admissions criteria above, we will make you an offer with a lower tariff requirement than our standard entry criteria, as published on our online prospectus. You don’t need to do anything other than declaring the relevant criteria above on your application form.

If you have any questions about your offer or any of the above, please contact our enquiries team and they will be happy to help.
