Advancing Practice in Neurological Therapy (Distance Learning)
The module is aimed at Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists who have a special interest or would like to develop a special interest in treating Neurological Conditions.
You may study this module either entirely as distance learning or you may choose to attend university based sessions. You should make your preference clear when you apply for the module.
Benefits of taking this module
This module will facilitate the development of advanced clinical skills that reflect the current evidence base underpinning neurological rehabilitation.
This module will be studied as a university based face to face delivery with some supporting online materials. The focus of this module is to enhance your clinical skills and so enhance your clinical practice. Within this module you will gain understanding of how the central nervous system controls movement how neurological conditions damage affect the function of the central nervous system and advance your skills to affect recovery.
This will be through a combination of online material, discussion forums, practical workshops and seminars enabling you to apply and critically evaluate treatment strategies appropriate to neurological rehabilitation.
Summary of overall aims of the module/ general areas covered.
Your learning should have a direct impact on your clinical practice. You will be encouraged to identify personal objectives that you wish to develop within your clinical practice; this can either be within your own practice or via the Supervised Clinical Experience (SCE) that will be provided for all full time students or those not currently working as a Physiotherapist. In this module you will develop your clinical handling skills, your observational and analytical skills in the area of posture and movement dysfunction. You will explore treatment of complex neurological conditions. Current approaches in neurological rehabilitation will be considered along with the evidence base that underpins them.
- Normal CNS Function Motor control/learning/Neuroplasticity
- Complex Task analysis/ Movement analysis
- Verticality and Neglect-recognition and Treatment
- Tonal management
- Ataxia/ dyspraxia
- Advanced Clinical Skills session
- Fitness Strength, fatigue in longer Term conditions
Service user patient workshops/ skype support
The online materials have all been developed with patients in treatment sessions, support during the clinical skills weeks can be delivered to distance learning students by skype workshops on online forums.
Skills gained for your organisation
Each student's organisation will gain staff with enhanced clinical reasoning and advanced handling skills which will enable them to develop their practice in line with current national and local policies. The students will be able to pass on their gained knowledge to others, improving overall effectiveness and patient outcome.
This module is linked to the Advancing Physiotherapy Programme but can also be taken as a stand-alone module.

Module assessment is made up of one or more assessment tasks. The assessment task(s) for this module are:
- Viva: typically, a combination of a presentation/demonstration to one or more academics, with discussion, questioning and oral feedback
