This module aims to provide the theoretical underpinning that supports and complements your practical training necessary to achieve competency in patient centres musculoskeletal ultrasound practice.

The module is primarily aimed at Radiographers and Physiotherapists.

The module will develop the skills and competencies required for advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound clinical practice.

What you learn 

You will develop an in depth knowledge of the role of ultrasound, including its limitations, in the demonstration of normal and abnormal anatomy that supports and complements your practical training necessary to achieve advanced competency in patient centred musculoskeletal ultrasound practice.

General areas covered 

  • normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology of the basic structures of the upper and lower limb (including shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, foot, and ankle joints as well as muscle, tendon, ligaments and associated structures)
  • normal and pathological sonographic appearances of the upper and lower limb
  • management of acute upper and lower limb soft tissue injuries
  • differential diagnosis, report writing, communication of results and referral pathways
  • invasive procedures for therapeutic purpose, the use of Doppler and advanced ultrasound techniques
  • complementary/alternative imaging modalities.

Home / EU student: £1,650

International students: £2,320 - this is part-time study and therefore cannot provide sponsorship for Tier 4.

    • Relevant professional qualification
    • Relevant work experience
    • Relevant workplace opportunities and organisational support
    • You must have access to 14 hours per week ultrasound scanning with an appropriately qualified clinical supervisor (this is not provided by the University).

    The above must be evidenced in your application form.
