‘I built on my existing degrees to make me a better teacher’

Masum Murtaza

Masum Murtaza
Masum is studying MSc International Marketing at Sheffield Hallam University, and moved here eight months ago. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Bangladesh, and also worked as a teacher there for ten years. He decided to seek out further study to expand his knowledge and develop his teaching methodology.

'While both studying and teaching I felt somewhat limited in my knowledge and expertise, so I made a plan to acquire more in-depth knowledge and develop my teaching methodology.

'I chose to study in the UK to study for a few different reasons, one being that employers and academics alike recognise the UK’s higher education degrees and qualifications. The living and healthcare costs over here are very reasonable, and the UK has a friendly and multicultural atmosphere that allows you to meet people from all over the world.

'Sheffield Hallam is one of the largest universities in the UK and offers exceptional teaching with over 700 foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate, or research programs. Something that influenced my decision to study here was the applied learning aspect of Sheffield Hallam courses. The study programmes are completely based on work experience and case studies from the real world, so students may have many opportunities to put theory into practice.

'I found the atmosphere at Sheffield Hallam very cooperative, with experienced faculty staff, helpful administrators and enormous learning facilities. The teaching style here is very different from what I’ve experienced before; the hands-on experience helps students to think of the issues they’re addressing in a wider context and innovate new strategies.

'Applying to Sheffield Hallam was very straightforward, and I got a lot of support from the International Experience Team. When the Covid-19 pandemic started I was seriously worried about what to do, but the university was always there to help me. They even extended my enrollment dates due to personal circumstances. From the very first day of being at Sheffield Hallam there was always help available.

'After I graduate I’d like to go back into teaching with the skills and connections I’ve honed at Sheffield Hallam. Just like my lecturers did with me, I’d like to inspire my students to enhance their inquisitiveness and widen their outlook on the world. I know that if I ever needed to seek advice on anything to do with my career I could network alongside international experts thanks to my education at Sheffield Hallam, and excel within the ever-changing policies of marketing.'
