Can I still apply for courses starting in January 2021?

You can still apply for courses starting in January 2021. Search our courses online and click the how to apply button on the course page to apply. We will process your application and respond to any enquiries as quickly as possible. Please bear with us as we are experiencing high volumes of enquiries and may be slightly slower than usual in responding to your calls or emails. Please don't send us any items through the post as we won't be able to access them.

Can I start in January 2021 instead of September 2020?

The University has a wide range of Undergraduate Top-Up and Postgraduate courses available for a January 2021 start. If you have applied to study on one of these courses and wish to change your start date to January, you can do so by contacting internationaladmissions@shu.ac.uk.

If you are starting your course in January 2021, we are running a pre-sessional engagement programme to help you prepare for your studies which will include an introduction to your subject area. We’ll be in touch with applicants to provide more information about this in the coming weeks.

If I am unable, or no longer wish, to start my course in January, will I be eligible for a refund or be able to defer my place?

All applicants who confirm their place and pay their deposit for January 2021 will be able to review their situation, and will be entitled to a full deposit refund on request until 1 January 2021 if unable to take their course place. Or, you can choose to defer your place to a course start date up to September 2022 regardless of any previous deferrals.

All students will be kept regularly up to date with all the latest news and developments in plans for teaching, learning and support and staying connected to the University, whether you choose to start in January or in a later intake.

What if I want to change the course I am interested in?

We are committed to being as flexible as we can with students in making the right choices for them and will support applicants to change the course they have applied to, to a suitable alternative in the run up to their start date, or as part of the deferral process. I have taken an online pre-sessional course in summer 2020 but now want to defer my place to January 2021. Will I be able to progress with this pause in my study?

We want to support you to progress to a course start date that is right for you, so we will accept 2020 online pre-sessional courses for entry up to two years from the date of the award.

If you undertook your pre-sessional course whilst domiciled in the UK, you will need to ensure you can make this deferral under your visa arrangements.

What do I do if I need to provide proof of my English Language requirement but test centres are closed?

The position of test centres in certain countries is rapidly changing. We recommend checking qualification providers’ websites for the latest advice. A list of our English language entry requirements is available on the website.

We are currently accepting a range of alternative tests should an applicant be unable to take an IELTS test. You can view details of the English language qualifications we are accepting on the website.

If you need to study a pre-sessional English language course before starting your degree, we are now offering a range of online pre-sessional English courses.

Can I access quarantine accommodation if I travel to Sheffield with dependants?

Unfortunately the nature of Student Accommodation in Sheffield means that it is not possible to access quarantine accommodation with dependants. However the University has worked with a number of landlords and hotels in the city who are able to support. You can contact accommodation@shu.ac.uk for further information regarding accommodation with dependants.

What specific support will I receive from the University during quarantine?

We will provide support for getting you set up in your accommodation, and comprehensive support of provision of basic necessities throughout any quarantine periods when you start in January 2021. This includes:

  • Two weeks rent-free quarantine period, prior to contract start dates, in partner University accommodation
  • Provision of basic necessities (bedding, pots and pans, cutlery) and food during two week quarantine periods at no cost to students
  • Accommodation and basic necessities (food and essentials) support for returning students needing to self-isolate

Can I access the free two-week quarantine accommodation and then move to different accommodation of my choosing afterwards?

Yes you can. You must make arrangements for you to recive quarantine accommodation in advance by notifying the accommodation service at Sheffield Hallam but following those two weeks you are free to sign a contract with any accommodation provider or landlord for the rest of your year.

Can I access the initial free quarantine accommodation if I book accommodation directly with a private sector landlord?

Yes you can but only if the private sector landlord is unable to support your quarantine. If they are unable to help you quarantine safely or fulfil your requirements then we can make arrangements for you to receive quarantine accommodation by notifying the accommodation service at Sheffield Hallam prior to your arrival.

Will the university support me during quarantine if I book accommodation directly with a private sector landlord

Yes but only if the private sector landlord is unable to support your quarantine. If they are unable to help you quarantine safely or fulfil your requirements then we can make arrangements for you to receive quarantine accommodation by notifying the accommodation service at Sheffield Hallam prior to your arrival.

Arrival into the UK, accommodation and quarantine

When do I need to be in the UK to start my course?

We are offering flexibility on course start dates, enabling you to enter the UK over an extended period, whilst still commencing your course at the start of term. If possible you should arrive in Sheffield to begin the term from 28 September. If that is not possible due to the COVID-19 situation, you should arrive by the following dates:

  • Quarantining students should arrive before 5 October 2020 and can take part in online learning, in the UK, during quarantine up to 19 October 2020.
  • Non-quarantining students should arrive before 19 October 2020 and should take part with online learning from enrolment to that date, either from home or in the UK.

Please note, all CAS latest arrival dates will be updated with this information. You will not need to do anything in order for this to happen.

If for any reason, you are unable to commence your course during the proposed entry dates, we will support you to defer your place to January 2021 or September 2021, depending on the course.

Students seeking permission to arrive after the latest arrival dates should contact international@shu.ac.uk. Exceptional cases will be considered on a case by case basis depending on course requirements.

If you fall into the UK definition of a clinically vulnerable person, and you think you should not travel to the UK at all during the COVID-19 pandemic, we may be able to support you to study remotely depending on your course. Please read this information and follow the guidance.

Will the university support airport arrivals into airports other than Manchester?

The airport pick up service is available only at Manchester airport. If you are arriving at a different airport, please follow the guidance published on our website. It is very important that you tell us when you will arrive in the UK. Please fill in the Arrivals Details Form even if you cannot use our airport pick up service.

If I am arriving into the UK at a time or place where no university arrival services are available, how should I arrange safe travel to campus?

The UK Government rules on self-isolation on arrival in the UK permit travel by public transport to the address where you plan to self-isolate. Please refer to the How to travel to the place where you are self-isolating section of this guidance document for further details.

Will I be able to find suitable accommodation?

We guarantee that accommodation will be available and you will be able to choose from a wide range of property and budget types close to the university campuses. With advance notice, most of our accommodation partners will be able to support flexible start dates and variable contract lengths. Your accommodation deposit will be refunded with no penalty if your course is no longer running, or you are unable to travel to the UK due to travel restrictions being in place.

We have been working closely with our accommodation providers and local Public Health services to ensure you are able to settle safely into your accommodation and start enjoying your university experience.

You can search and apply for accommodation online. The sooner you apply, the more likely you are to get your first choice of property. If you book your accommodation through us, you’ll get

  • flexible start dates
  • deferred contracts if you want
  • amended booking policies, so you’re not penalised if travel restrictions prevent you from starting your course on time

What safety measures have been put in place in student accommodation?

We’ll follow government guidance to give you a safe and comfortable home. This includes

  • regular and thorough cleaning of communal areas
  • cleaning and inspecting your room before you arrive
  • hand sanitiser stations and clear signage
  • communal spaces arranged with social distancing in mind
  • protective screens and PPE for staff
  • alterations to parcel delivery, maintenance requests and laundry facilities
  • support and services to help you self-isolate if you become unwell

What if I need to quarantine when I arrive in the UK?

Students from certain countries may need to self-quarantine for 14 days on arrival in the UK. Please check the UK Government information before you travel.

If you need to self-quarantine in January 2021, we guarantee the following package of support.

  • If you have booked accommodation through the University with one of the University’s partner providers, you will be able to self-quarantine in this accommodation. You can arrive up to two weeks before your contract start date free-of-charge and you will also receive food supplies during the quarantine at no additional cost.
  • If you have secured accommodation with a private landlord directly, you must check with them whether you can self-quarantine at their property, and what support they will provide. If you are advised that you cannot self-quarantine at your booked accommodation, or that they cannot support your needs, you must email accommodation@shu.ac.uk. You will be given an alternative accommodation for the duration of the quarantine at no additional cost.
  • In both cases, we can also provide starter packs (bedding, cutlery etc) to support you in settling into your accommodation.
  • To benefit from the support on offer, you must inform us after you have arrived in Sheffield by filling in the Arrived-at-SHU Form. You will need to provide the exact address you will be staying in on arrival, and full contact details.
  • We will use the contact information provided in this form to keep in touch with you while you are in quarantine. You should not leave your accommodation during the quarantine unless you need to seek medical help.
  • You will be able to engage with any sessions and teaching delivered online, so please bring your personal laptop. You will also be able to contact the Virtual Meet & Greet Desk.
  • If, during quarantine, you find you are no longer happy with the support provided by your landlord, you can contact us at accommodation@shu.ac.uk. The University will provide you with alternative accommodation and support at no extra cost.

What support is available as I prepare to travel to the UK to study at Sheffield Hallam University?

Our International Experience Team provide extensive support for international students, in the lead up to and during the arrival and orientation period, and throughout your studies with us. You can find full details of this comprehensive support offer on our website.

To provide additional support around our flexible start dates this year, we’ve extended our welcome services to help all our international students get off to the best possible start at Sheffield Hallam, whenever you arrive in the UK.This includes a virtual meet and greet, an online orientation and Hallam Welcome programme, airport pick-up service and additional one-to-one support.

Visas

Will the process for issuing visas be delayed or modified?

To ensure that our teaching approach for the 2020/21 academic year is compliant with UKVI rules, we have liaised with the Government at every stage of our planning. The Government have confirmed that our applicants will be able to secure a tier 4 visa to travel and study at Sheffield Hallam.

We are issuing Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) with course start and end dates, reflecting the date you would be expected to be based within the UK to study. This will be confirmed with you via email, relating to your specific course and making you aware of any changes to the delivery mode of study.

UK Visa processing centres have re-opened in many countries, so please keep informed of the arrangements of your local centres in processing your visa application.

Careers and employability

Will I still be able to gain work experience as part of my degree?

Applying what you learn through placements, projects and work experience is a key part of studying at Sheffield Hallam. As a result of our commitment to ensuring our students receive these practical opportunities, 96% of Hallam graduates are in work or further study, and 73% are in highly skilled employment, 15 months after graduating*.

We have been working hard to adapt the work experience and placements offer, to be more flexible and to include virtual opportunities where it is appropriate. This means you can still apply your learning and knowledge, but in the safest way possible.

Employability support

The Careers and Employability Service provide specialist resources, advice and events for international students to help with career planning, finding a placement or part-time work, and making the most of your time while studying at Sheffield Hallam. This includes working in partnership with the International Experience Team to deliver a number of ‘Working in the UK’ information and Q&A sessions during your orientation programme.

We also offer the Hallam Achieve programme, specifically for international students, that is designed to enhance your career readiness and employability success by helping you to identify and articulate your skills, knowledge and experience in an appropriate and professional way. Through a series of interactive workshops, events and a mock interview, you will take ownership of your personal career journey, improve your confidence in navigating the recruitment process and shape your future success
