Arrival weekend: travel advice

Arrival weekend at Sheffield Hallam is exciting, but it’s also a very busy time in the city.

Students from both Sheffield universities will be moving in on the weekend of 21 and 22 September. There are also planned road closures on both days, which could result in periods of heavy traffic.

You should

  • plan your journey in advance
  • be aware of planned traffic disruption
  • monitor traffic news on the day
  • try to stick to your arrival time slot

Finding your arrival slot

Once you have completed your SHUstart Welcome you will be able to login to the SHU Accommodation Portal to select an arrival slot from the times available.

There is also the option to arrive early. Contact your hall of residence directly for more information

Traffic disruption

Saturday 21 September

Sheffield Wednesday will be playing at home. The match lasts from 3pm to 4.30pm, and will cause

  • increased traffic around the Hillsborough football ground before and after the match
  • closure of Penistone Road (A61) for up to an hour after the match, with a short diversion in place for motorists

This could affect you if you are travelling from the north and entering or leaving the city in the afternoon.

Sunday 22 September

The Sheffield 10k run will cause road closures in central and west Sheffield in the morning. A small number of road closures will continue into the afternoon.

The race organisers have published detailed information on planned closures, as well as a diversion map aimed at students arriving in the city.

Parking advice

Parking on site and around halls is limited. Please be considerate to other students arriving and move your vehicle as soon as possible. But don't stress – halls staff will be on hand to direct you and help you find a car park.
