Everyone starts uni a bit nervous about making friends. But everyone’s in the same boat, so throw yourself into university life, and you’ll soon find like-minded people - and make friends for life.
Here are five ways to make friends when you start uni.
1. Join a society
Joining a society is the perfect way to meet people with the same interests as you- or to try something completely new. And if you can't find the one you want, we'll help you start your own.
Check out all the societies here and register your interest.
2. Play sport
Taking part in sport is one of the best ways to build friendships and try something new. We have sports and fitness options for absolutely everyone (even if you hated PE at school).
Check out the options.
3. Make the most of Refreshers
In your first week, everyone's in the same boat. Push yourself to talk to as many people as possible, there's lots of events going on to meet other people from outside your course. Be true to yourself, and enjoy the experience.
You can also take part in the Hallam Big Read which welcomes all new students with a special edition book. The book 'My name is Leon' by Kit de Waal is there for you to read, enjoy and talk about with your friends. Copies will be available in student accommodation and the Adsetts and Collegiate libraries, make sure you pick one up.
By giving everyone one thing in common, we hope it will create a community so you will feel more welcome, enabling you to settle in quickly and adjust to your new life at university. Look out for the range of activities and events taking place during the year linked to the key themes within the book.
4. Explore Sheffield
With your new mates in tow, lose yourself in all Sheffield has to offer. Sample independent shops, taste the local craft beer, and find out for yourself why more students choose to stay in Sheffield than any other city in the UK.
