Shane Meadows and Mark Herbert sat on set looking at a screen.

A Hallam graduate, Mark studied Film Studies between 1991 and 1994. In this special lecture, he will explore Warp's 20-year history of projects and discuss; the role Sheffield and its creative network have played, his dedication to telling working class stories, and the risks of carrying your Emmy round in a Sports Direct bag.

Warp Films is a Sheffield-based independent film and television production company, and a leading force in contemporary British cinema. The Emmy-winning show ‘Adolescence’ is the latest in an eclectic and critically acclaimed list of titles, including ‘Dead Man’s Shoes', ‘This is England’ and ’Four Lions'.

The talk is the first event of Sheffield Hallam’s Future Now Festival of Creativity, showcasing the work of the Sheffield Creative Industries Institute’s graduating students. These emerging creatives show us the future through exhibitions, events, performances and screenings.

With exhibitions taking place across Sheffield city centre, in London and online April-June 2026, the free festival features the best emerging artists, designers, filmmakers, animators, writers, architects and performers.

Roger Bateman, Director of Sheffield Creative Industries Institute at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “We're delighted to welcome Mark Herbert back to Hallam to launch this year's Future Now Festival of Creativity and to give us an exclusive insight into the work of Warp Films, past and present.

“The festival is our annual celebration of student talent, and it really brings the city alive with creative work. We have nearly 50 events across 16 venues in Sheffield, with more than 400 students showing everything from performances and games to fashion, photography and architecture. What makes it special is that it’s open to everyone.”

From ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ to ‘Adolescence’: An evening with Mark Herbert, will take place on Tuesday 21 April 2026 from 6pm at Hallam’s Pennine Lecture Theatre. Reserve a free place here.
