Living at home

Over half of our student community choose to live at home and commute to campus.

Choosing to live at home doesn't mean you miss out

Making the decision to live at home whilst studying at university can offer flexibility, financial savings and benefit your wellbeing or personal circumstances.

We cover everything you need to make it work, including planning your journey, budgeting tips, student advice and support services. There are also plenty of opportunities to make friends, take up part-time work and feel part of the Hallam community. Here's how you can make the most of university life as a commuter student.

Why live at home?

Moving out for university doesn’t work for everyone, and there’s lots of reasons why commuting might be the right choice for you.

Living at home while studying means you could:

  • Keep up with local friendships or family responsibilities
  • Save money or be more financially stable
  • Enjoy a short commute to campus if you live locally
  • Balance a pre-existing job with your degree
  • Support your wellbeing and reduce stress.

Support when you need it

Support starts from the moment you join Sheffield Hallam. Even if you’re not living on campus, you'll be a part of our community from day one, with lots of resources to help you settle into university life.

You can also find specialist advice as well as practical support to help you manage your finances and cope with the cost of living.
