Tips on commuting to uni

Over half of our students stay at home and travel into university. There are so many benefits to coming into campus, and it's a great way to make friends and get involved in student life in Sheffield.

Our commuting Insiders share where they travel to uni from, their top tips for new commuting students and the best thing about living at home as a university student.

You can also join our commuter chat group to ask questions to current commuter students or find other people who are thinking about commuting.

Olivia - commuting by bus and tram

Olivia - Insider student, BA Business Management and Enterprise with Foundation Year

Studying:

BA Business Management and Enterprise with Foundation Year.

Commuting from:

Rotherham.

Why I love commuting:

I get to see my family more and save a lot of money as I don't have to pay weekly rent and food costs!

My top tip:

Have a plan, and a contingency plan! Often journeys get cancelled or delayed which is out of your control. It means I have a more relaxing journey and I'm not stressing over being late.

Darlene - commuting by bike

Studying:

MSc International Hospitality & Tourism Management.

Commuting from:

Sheffield.

Why I love commuting:

Cycling's a fantastic way to get exercise, clear your head, and save money!

My top tip:

Plan your route, dress for the weather (remember a waterproof jacket), get a good bike lock and make sure you have lights. Also, to stay safe always wear a helmet and stick to designated cycle routes where you can.

Ella - commuting by car

Ella, Insider - PhD in Psychology

Studying:

PhD in Psychology.

Commuting from:

Sheffield by car.

Why I love commuting:

For me, it was a great balance of going into university and still having the family life that means so much to me.

My top tip:

Plan your commute and how you are going to get to Sheffield. Also if you are considering driving in, make sure you know where you will park. Try and make the most of social events like Welcome Week. It’s a great way to meet new people.

Munibah - commuting by train

Studying:

BA Childhood Studies

Commuting from:

Rotherham by train.

Why I love commuting:

It allows me to use more of my time working on my essays and reflective writing. In my free time I can work part-time, go out for a meal or go shopping.

My top tip:

Take full advantage of any student discounts on travel for example the 16-25 railcard. Also, if your train is cancelled or you can't attend due to train strikes the staff at Sheffield Hallam are understanding.
