When and where can I apply for student accommodation?

Applications for student accommodation are currently open. You can apply online as soon as you have an offer to study at Sheffield Hallam, with new students also guaranteed an offer of a room in the halls of residence upon firm acceptance of an unconditional full-time course offer. However, you don’t need to accept a room offer, sign contracts, or pay a deposit until your results are confirmed.

How much does student accommodation in Sheffield, UK typically cost?

The cost of student accommodation in Sheffield, UK, varies by hall and location, but you can expect prices to range from up to £100 to over £150 per week. The cheapest rental cost goes for £85 per week, while the most expensive is £210 per week. The cost of living in Sheffield is lower compared to bigger cities like Manchester, Leeds, or London, including groceries and restaurants.

Where do most students live in Sheffield?

All 13 halls of residence are located within walking distance of both Sheffield Hallam campuses. The most popular student area is the Sheffield City Centre, due to its vibrant culture, nightlife and food and drink choices, alongside the more niche spots like indie shops, thrift stores, and art studios. Broomhill, Crookes, and Ecclesall Road are also popular student housing areas and accessible to our campuses, amenities and public transportation.

Is living in Sheffield safe for students?

Yes, living in Sheffield is safe for students, though it’s always important to remain vigilant. Sheffield is considered one of the safest big cities in the UK, with the crime rate in 2024 at 102 for every 1,000 people – lower than many nearby locations. On top of that, all our student accommodation is registered with the Snug housing scheme, which is a property quality standard promoted by the University and Sheffield City Council.

What facilities and amenities are there in student accommodation?

Amenities vary by hall, but each hall of residence is furnished with standard bedroom furniture, including a bed, a wardrobe, a desk or workstation and a chair. Rent also covers bills, contents insurance and Wi-Fi. Certain halls come with wheelchair access, car parking, and bike storage. Other amenities may include common rooms, study areas, laundry facilities and on-site gyms.

How do you pay your rent?

Certain halls require deposits or advanced rent payments, which you can pay for during the booking process once you’ve had your room offer. Details on payment method should be provided by the landlord or accommodation provider. If you have a guarantor, rent can be paid in instalments over the academic year – typically over October, January, and April. Without a guarantor, you may be expected to pay the rent in full before moving in.

What if I don’t want to live in the halls?

There are plenty of options for private sector houses, flats, and studios in Sheffield. We work closely with landlords and have a database of approved properties to ensure your experience in a private student accommodation is safe and comfortable.
