About Sheffield Institute of Arts
Sheffield Institute of Arts (SIA) can trace its history back to 1843, and is now the art school at Sheffield Hallam University, one of Britain’s largest and most progressive modern universities, on the doorstep of the Cultural Industries Quarter. And we’re right in the heart of a great place to be a student (in fact, more of Sheffield’s graduates choose to settle here after they graduate than anywhere else but London).
We combine all the advantages of a traditional art school (particularly our fantastic creative community and our emphases on practical work and research with all the benefits of being part of a larger university (brilliant student lifestyle, large Students’ Union and plenty of student support services). We have excellent links with other major learning institutions around the world, where you might even do a study exchange.
We operate our own art gallery, the Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery, and our annual student exhibition, Creative Spark, showcases our students’ talents across all disciplines. Plus, we run our own research centre, the Art and Design Research Centre (ADRC).
All of this puts us (and you) at the forefront of creative learning and innovation. So why not find out more about our BA, MA and PhD courses?
Your great future
Sheffield Institute of Arts students are recognised as being talented free-thinkers who know how to solve problems—and this will make you very attractive to employers as well as likely to succeed as an independent practitioner. Our alumni include Nick Park, Kid Acne, Mark Herbert, Rob Hardy, and Godfrey Sykes.
Expert teaching and support
We offer a challenging, creative and supportive learning environment in which to develop your talents. Many of our teaching staff practise independently, and their teaching talent is in great demand throughout the UK and abroad. Our highly skilled technicians are also often practising artists and designers.
Enviable facilities
We continue to invest heavily in providing students and researchers with world-class facilities, including workshops, studios, techniques, equipment and software, which will help you to explore traditional and modern ways of working. These facilities (not always available elsewhere) and our exciting, purpose-designed spaces will help your ideas take flight.
Emphasis on collaboration
At Sheffield Institute of Arts, there are no boundaries. We’ll encourage you to work alongside others on your course; students from other disciplines; and even other departments at Sheffield Hallam University (such as engineering and computing). There are even opportunities to collaborate with business and industry as you participate in live briefs, commissions and work experience.
