We offer outstanding facilities
Creativity is about imagining, but it’s also about doing—about bringing your ideas to life and seeking ways to make things better. So at Sheffield Institute of Arts (SIA) you’ll find all the resources and facilities you need to do just that. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to roll your sleeves up, try things out and get stuck in.

Practical and realistic
The degree courses at Sheffield Institute of Arts are all very hands-on. Thanks to our excellent resources and facilities, you’ll gain all sorts of experience while learning to use the kind of equipment you’ll encounter later in the workplace. We see it as our role to provide the practical space, resources and community you need to be able to think, collaborate and make.
Fantastic equipment and studios
We’ve made huge investments in world-class facilities, equipment and spaces for making; we even have several 3D printing machines, enabling you to create models or prototypes. Our facilities include workshops and studios for art, design, animation, architecture, creative writing, furniture-making, metalwork and print-making. There are also TV, film and radio studios with editing suites; photography studios; a creative media centre with media stores; performance workshops; and CAD studios. Substantial stores make it possible for you to access all the materials and equipment you need (including a huge photographic store where you can check out cameras, lenses, lighting equipment and more).
As good as the workplace—or even better!
The equipment, facilities and technology you find at Sheffield Institute of Arts are at least as good as what you’d encounter in the workplace; in many instances, they’re more up to date and more industry standard. That means that when you graduate and start work, you’ll already know how to use essential equipment and software.
Use real-world equipment on placement
Few things speak louder to employers than good, solid work experience. As part of your course, you could choose to do a work placement in business or industry, or with a cultural organisation—or even with our own commercial design consultancy, Design Futures.
This enables you to put into practice what you’re learned on your course, as well as getting real-world experience of using industry-standard equipment and technology.
