Doctor Azida Zainol
Senior Lecturer
Summary
I am a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and Software Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University. My research interests relate to applied artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, digital health and secure software engineering. I am interested in bridging the gap between research and teaching to support our students as they develop the skills to solve real world technological problems.
About
I am a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and Software Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, with more than 20 years of experience in a higher education context. I am interested in applied artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, digital health technologies and secure software engineering. I am keen to apply my interest in new and emerging technologies with real-world issues such as health, sustainability and education.
In the classroom, I use a research-informed and student-focused approach. I leverage problem-based learning approaches, collaborative projects and real-world case studies to help students make connections between theory and practice. This is particularly important to support students in developing the technical knowledge, analytical thinking skills and confidence to prosper in the technology sector. I teach a variety of modules such as Secure Software Engineering, System Analysis and Design, Software Architecture, Advanced Practitioner Inquiry and Object-Oriented Programming.
My research activity is intrinsically linked to teaching. I have led and contributed to funded projects with various organizations, including a smart waste management in the context of Industry 4.0, mobile health applications and digital resources on outcome-based education. These activities and experience enable me to bring current and relevant knowledge into the teaching domain and foster the learning experiences of students.
In addition, I support graduate students and serve as an external examiner for PhD students internationally, international research groups and individual PhD students. I value mentoring students and working with people from different disciplines to build an inclusive academic space in which students and researchers feel supported in doing their academic work.

Research
- Industry and Innovation Research Institute
My current research project is exploring an artificial-intelligence-enabled early detection system for breast cancer through a federated-learning approach, allowing multiple institutions to conduct collective AI training on medical imaging data without the transfer of patient-identifiable information. This methodology promotes privacy of data, complies with national data protection legislation and supports the ethical use of AI for healthcare.
