David M Jones BSc (Hons), FHEA, PgCert, PGCE

Senior Lecturer in Science Education (Physics)

Summary

I am an academic tutor on the 3Y BSc &QTS, PGCE and Teach First courses. I also work within the Centre for Science Education with a variety of CPD courses. Before joining Sheffield Hallam University, I worked as a Secondary science and physics teacher for 23 years in schools in Birmingham, New Zealand, Derbyshire and Sheffield. I had a variety of roles in that time and was involved in many projects; including a post-16 Manufacturing and Technology course, CASE and The Institute of Physics’ Advancing Physics Project. I provided CPD to teachers and, with a keen interest in the use of ICT in schools, worked as a consultant for a number of software companies on their physics based packages. I am a long-time member of the ASE and a regular attendee of the Annual Conference.

My main role now is teaching on the various Initial Teacher Education routes, with a particular emphasis on Physics and the effective use of ICT. I also work closely with our PGCE and Teach First students and mentors in our partnership schools. I am also involved with the Centre for Science Education and delivering their high quality CPD.

I am heavily involved with teaching on the Professional (PGCE) Year of the course and have responsibility for the legacy 3 Year BSc Science with QTS course which was revalidated for 2013 onwards. I also teach on the undergraduate physics education courses, for Teach First and the PgCert Course for new members of staff. I joined the team in September 2008 following a successful career teaching physics and completed a Masters degree in Education in 2013.

I have a BSc (Hons) in Engineering Science and Technology (Loughborough) and a PGCE in Science with Mathematics (Loughborough). I taught science and physics for 23 years in schools in Birmingham, New Zealand, Derbyshire and Sheffield to students aged 11 to 19. In the role of Head of Physics I had responsibility for over 70 A level students and as Head of Science I ran a department of 21 staff across a split site school of 1500 students. I have been involved in a variety of projects including a post-16 TVEI funded Manufacturing and Technology course, CASE and The Institute of Physics’ Advancing Physics Project. I have a keen interest in the use of ICT in schools, providing CPD to teachers and have also worked as a consultant for a number of software companies on their physics based packages. I have been a long time member of the ASE and am a regular attendee of the Annual Conference.

I teach modules at a variety of levels on physics and physics education, as well as the effective use of ICT in school science lessons.
