Summary

Frances Robertson qualified as a registered architect in 1990 having worked in large and small practices in London (Hawkins Brown, DEGW, Fitch Benoy, Holder Mathias Alcock). She graduated from Strathclyde University in 1984 with a BSc (Hons) in Architecture: a course rooted in building science and cutting edge CAD. She studied for her Diploma in Architecture at PCL (now the University of Westminster) and has a passion for the theory of architectural design and detailing tempered with pragmatism. She became a professional Architectural Technologist (MCIAT) in 2015.

About

In 2001 she began as an Associate Lecturer in the second year AED Design Studio module at Sheffield Hallam University. Increasing her input over the subsequent years, she took up a part-time post working in first and second year design studios and leading the Cultural Context 1 module and contributing to the development of the AED and AT courses. During this time she contributed to the successful RIBA validation of the AED course and the re-validation of the AT course. She became full-time in 2006 when she took up the course leadership of the AT undergraduate degree which she did until 2016.

Her job focuses on ensuring the AT student is provided with a challenging curriculum and prepared for eventual MCIAT status. Her focus is on the student experience and making each student realise their potential. She is an external examiner for Architectural Technology and assesses students and other institutions for CIAT. She is leading the AT Placement module and a project to address the BME attainment gap in HE.
